Some great photos there thanks Ed. These were my faves. I love that 72 soul boys pic.. You can taste the sweat, talc and amphetamines.. Is that Colin Curtis? I love 60'soul/Northern soul, and the whole scene in the 70's, they certainly kept the torch burning up north..the link for me was the scooter scene..denims, lambrettas, northern Soul.

Found the pic below on a Facebook page about my hometown, it's from 1969, and taken next to the medieval Buttercross in the town centre, trucker jackets galore.

The lads were on their way to a Blues festival in Derbyshire, a poster from that festival is below.

The lad bottom left is actually the Dad of a teacher at my wife's school, and lives close by to me.

A poster on the Facebook page also mentioned that they used to be regulars at a Soul night at Normanton baths, an adjacent town to ours.
Also mentioned was that the majority of these folk still called themselves Mods, even in 1969, which by talking to people from this time, that The skin scene wasn't very popular in my area, and most either went from mod to Suede, or mod to heavy rocker, not many glam rockers around here.

The other pics below I came across by using Google, and are of lads at the Normanton baths Soul night, early 70's.

I recognise tha lad on the left above, he was a mech engineer at the pit that I worked at, but was much older and balder when I knew him.

Family were an interesting band. ‘Music in a Dolls House’ was their big album. Not blues though. Lead singer had a unique vibrato style.


They never made it really big. Never cracked America.

Edgar Broughton band were eminently forgettable.

Both were long hair bands rather than skin or mod music.

Edgar Broughton band were eminently forgettable.

That pic of me in a Levi jacket that went viral - that was taken at Bath Blues Festival. I was there with my mate 'Cockney Bob' who was at Bath Uni at the time, and Edgar Broughton was performing. You're right, eminently forgettable except for a Shadows/Beefheart mashup called 'Apache Dropout', and their signature 'Out, Demons, Out!'

Well, they played 'Demons', and in the... er... chorus they encouraged the audience to shout along with "Out, Demons, Out!" Honestly I don't remember much shouting, except for myself and Bob, who were shouting "Out, Broughton, Out!" because we'd had enough of them!
