I have seen nice tanktops and V-neck jumpers in Marks&Spencer. I got grey jumper from there but it's made from cotton only. I also own one navy Ben Sherman tanktop, made from cotton too, but it doesn't seem to be so good quality as black lambswool tanktop from Fred Perry. Currently I'm trying to get burgundy merino Fred Perry jumper for a decent price.

so i've also a question:
i'm just wondering if you have you ever seen someon (special a girl) wearing a "pea coat blazer "? ( i don't know the exact name for it).

for example a blazer like this one ( if you don't know what i mean):

Pea Coats were worn mainly by Mods.I had one ,navy blue,in `65.Very warm and comfortable. The Girls also had a version of this.

I agree with M-O-M on this.I had fine wool(maybe Merino) ones which I got from Gentlemens` Outfitters or later ,when specialist Shops started catering for Skinheads then Suedeheads.

Hi Rude Gal,

That's more of a dandy Mod jacket than a Skinhead jacket. Sometimes referred to as regency style. I had one almost identical to that in the 90's it was that shade of green as well but with a slightly standing collar. In fact I've still got it somewhere in the house - must e-bay it!

I don't think Skins would have worn them. Though there is a well-known piece of footage of some suedeheads and one of them has a 3 button db blazer with brass buttons. Also there is a photo of Laurel Aitken wearing one. I also don't recall seeing girls wearing them...

Edit: here the fella on the left (sorry for quality of pic!)

. I've been trying to find a sweater vest in Blue Navy or Burgundy(or grey). I can't say I've tried hard enough to find one, though I would still like some recommendations(besides a fred perry).

I agree with MoM and Browniecj, the brand was not important, M&S would probably have sufficed. I've heard that Slazenger was a brand that was favoured though(maybe MoM/Browniecj etc could confirm?) if any logos were worn and a 'heritage' line has recently been introduced. Uniqlo do some decent knitwear for the price as do M&S, John Smedley are good though more pricey.

I bought a single breasted Blazer, from Harry Fentons, with the Brass Buttons-1970.These were not Pea Coats..There was a period(`65/`66) when Mods wore Naval Themed Clothing-such as Pea Coats,Striped T-Shirts and Boating Shoes.Girls wore the same things-coupled with headbands. The Picture of Laurel Aitken comes from (about `68,not sure though).

MoM & others can confirm this & or tell me I am wrong if that is the case. From what I have heard, head/face tattoo's were not the sort of thing 69 class skins would sport/support in a positive way. As a very oversimplified way of putting it, 60's Skins gravitated uncompormisingly to the "smart" look, while SOME revival skins (see late 70's - 80's +), many of which arrived via the backdoor of punk/Oi! gravitated towards a more brutal/hard interpretation. Basically, face & head tattoos are a shock value, street/boredom & gang culture influenced thing. -The head cross being more closely related to hard case revival skins as opposed to revival skins that emulated the look/roots of skinhead (could even be an interpretation of the whole "crucified by society"/crucified skin type thing if there ever was a meaning to that specific tatt).

On a separate tangent, in the US (specifically L.A.) there were a few peeps with the cross & other head tatts, but allot of this seems to have been influenced by the hard poser & / or copy-cat culture spawned from this pic & other similar pics of English kids from that time:

Nobody I knew,in `69,had face Tattoos.Considered as a no,no.Some had neck Tats but not many.It was mainly the Revival Skins that went into Face Tattoos etc.Never knew the reason of the Cross on the Foreheads.Perhaps it had something to do with the Logo "Crucified Skins",which appears on T`Shirts. We certainly did not feel "Crucified".

First time poster here, 26 y.o. This thread has been a joy to read (yes, I've read/skimmed almost the entire thing).

I've been into the general "punk" subculture since I was about 14 years-old, still go to shows and play some music, just got certified to teach and I'm having a baby; I decided it's time to move beyond jeans and thrift store/band t-shirt or sweater every day. Never been a big fan of Oi! but I do love me some early ska and reggae in addition to all of the classic punk/post-punk/American hardcore bands that are my bread and butter. I've always admired the skin and suedehead styles, so I've been revamping my wardrobe, taking nods from the aforementioned subcultures and some other classic "preppy" items. I've always worn pretty tight pants and had an inclination towards collared shirts and sweaters, etc. so this is a pretty natural transitions, really. I've got got a pair of thrift store 8-eyelet Docs I've always reserved for hikes the past couple of years that have now made it into regular rotation, and my generous 87 y.o. grandfather has supplied me with a bounty of sweater vests, v-necks, wingtips, loafers, polo shirts (not Perry or Sherman, obviously) and even a shawl collar sweater, haha!

I just got back from Italy, and while there I found a few pairs of nice dress pants at a thrift store (of course they're naturally a slimmer fit since they're Italian- I've found in the States, if you're not near an H&M store, you have to look pretty hard to find a pair of slim fit pants that aren't prohibitively expensive- I'd like some Sta-Prest type trousers but the closest I can find are Dickies which are not slim enough). When I got back to the states, I had a tailor hem them for me to get a good sort of high-water length to show off socks and shoes/boots.

So- my question: I have this one pair of khaki pants that I love the length now and the way they look pressed, but there's just a little too much material in the thigh- could a tailor take the thighs in to have a slimmer fit?

I've never seen this documentary myself some of you might have, but it talks quite a bit about the phenomenon of "**** Bashing" among some of the earliest skins. Just curious how common was it in the early days of the skinhead movement? Some of you guys that have been there since the 60s did you witness anything like it yourself, or like everything else did the media just blow it out of proportion for sensationalism?
