Issue No. 3 of "Yell" - not really getting any better, is it...

The tall guy, bottom right, shows us how to wear a cardy with Sta-Prests

This was the last ever "Yell" and probably our best layout ever, lampooning tabloid press.

The guy in the centre of the photo was the ONLY skin I ever saw in the late 60s wearing a donkey jacket.

amazing stuff!!

I'd actually seen those Yell scans before, and here we are talking with the fella that wrote them. Really is a small world!

MoM, thanks much for finding the clippings and putting them here, it's really taken the thread to a new level of awesomeness

Wrote part of them, Jason, and I'm not especially proud of the standard of journalism!

thanks, Jason, for scanning that! it's exactly what i needed.

These Yell scans are great, too. I especially like the reggae reviews. I can only imagine what it was like to hear those classics like "Pressure Drop" when they first came out; it's great to see someone who knew what he was talking about being just as excited as I was when I first heard those tunes. It shows just how classic they were.

And I was going to ask you about that guy wearing the donkey jacket when I saw the scans over at the original site, but you beat me to it!

Stilts I have no idea where IT originally got that photo from.

Regarding Steve Maxted's knowledge of Reggae, I only ever saw him caught out once, and I think it might even have been in the page(s) of Yell. He liked an instrumental by The Upsetters called "Clint Eastwood" (on the Punch label), but then he absolutely slated Lee Perry's version of the Coaster's "Yackety Yack" - but he didn't recognise the instrumental backing track, which was... you guessed it... "Clint Eastwood". Obviously Lee had recorded his version of the Coasters' novelty rocker, but the instrumental backing was released as a single first.

hello all, have been following this thread for about six months now but this is my first post, have to say what a mighty read this has been. my interests are clothes, scooters, manchester city f.c. and music,in that order.spent all my early and teenage years in Manchester England, but am now back living in Ireland for the past ten years. I am one of eight siblings four of each gender, have three older brothers, the eldest was a skinhead/suedehead/bootboy,one a mod revivalist around '79-82 the next was a soccer casual, thats where im coming from. I am a skinhead who is into the scooter scene. Was never into the bleached jeans and braces but draw my influences from an earlier style, my favoured attire is along the lines of parallel trousers, high roll collar bd's, lambswool 'v'neck, longwing brogues or penny loafers,** hall indistructible socks in various colours, topped off with a harrington or fingertip length sheepskin coat, although when riding my vespa the 8 hole dm's come out.keep up the excellent posts lads!ktf Sean.

MoM, I noticed in the penultimate one (IT #71) it's mentioned, "We don't call ourselves skinheads anymore." If I may ask, what was the deciding factor for you, at least, in shedding the label that was foisted on you in the first place after embracing it for a short time?

Those words were Dave Burke's, not mine. I remember simply printing that without comment. However I think the deciding factor would have been all the mini-skins going off at half-cock. I think Dave put his finger on part of the reason Yell folded - the "movement" was beginning to lose it's integrity and cohesion.

So, once it really hit the press and then people started to copy and caricature an already obvious caricature of the original style/"movement" that was the beginning of the end?

LOL rather convoluted way of expressing it, but yes, that's about it.

LOL. Well, I tend to read alot of British pedantic literature and have developed my own 21st century style of pedantry. Even before that, though, an older fellow I used to work in a warehouse with once told me I always find the longest and hardest way of doing something.
