Nice gear. I like the blue L-2 they make too. I’m interested in flight jacket evolution but I’m by no means an informed nerd on the subject. I prefer blue to sage green but I understand the USAF changed for the necessity of camouflaging downed pilots. I remember seeing ‘Strategic Air Command’ with James Stewart which features blue flight jackets.

Who is making the best MA-1's right now?
As mentioned before, if you are looking for something contemporary but «authentic» (rather a replica) Real McCoy’s and Buzz Rickson rule.
Those Bronson products are appealing, but never saw one in the flesh.
For the rest, it depends where you live. For example in Europe you have less choice, and if you order in USA you will have Taxes, and you can’t try it on (always found that the fit is especially critical for MA-1s).
In my case I now have «takes»: less puffy and in different materials.
But if i wanted to buy one more faithful to the original that doesn’t break the bank, I would simply go for the Alpha VF59 (vintage fit 1959), that has the advantage to exist in «long» version, if you are tall.
Of course there are many other options.

Loads of brummie / black country accents but I don’t know if that was all shot in one place or assembled from footage taken at several times / locations. That one hairy lad with glasses doing a mid-Atlantic accent, not sure if he’s putting it on.
One of them in the club mentions Wolverhampton. I tried searching for the record shop and that one (at least the exterior) was on Dean St. London W1. Danny Baker worked at the South Molton St branch.

Is that a purple Harris Tweed?
Not Harris but very heavy tweed in a purple marle colour. Thick as carpet!

I wrote it up here …

Surely a bit warm for where you are based?

First time you are not photographed with the left foot forward too. Variety is the spice of life.

I was in New York / New Jersey for work. Was looking forward to it being the festive time of year but the weather was foul so I stayed mostly indoors.
The wider point is that I reckon I might retire in approx five years and clothes like these do not transition well into a Florida retiree’s wardrobe so I’m not sure of their fate. Maybe someone is gonna get some bargains on eBay one day!

As for the feet - it’s a mirror image. Old habits die hard!😁

I can't stand slim collared shirts, how are we supposed to wear a tie with that? I need some bigger collars that I can wear at parties and gigs which I don't mind getting sweaty in, and I can't find any for a good price :(

For cheaper shirts, maybe Relco? Not too many companies make collars high enough for “the look” these days.

I recommend trawling eBay, Etsy, or Grailed for secondhand Brooks Brothers, J. Press, and Andover Shop buttondown shirts. There are great deals to be had. Many of them, especially J. Press, have the back-of-collar button, and some are even trim-fit. Look especially for “J Press Pennant Label”, as that line was for younger(presumably in-shape) men.

It helps to know your shirt size, e.g. 16.5/34, as many classic shirts go by collar/sleeve size and not alpha sizing.

Happy hunting!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
