I may be delusional, but I seem to remember something in "Spirit Of 69 - a Skinhead Bible" about a gang of original skins who pierced their noses. It always struck me as weird. Could it be true?

"De things dat yo liable to read in de Bible, it ain't necessarily so!"

Thanks to the interwebs, I was able to find the quote. It's on that "A-Z Of Skinhead Style" section of the book, on the part about earrings:
"(...)Well before punk, some Sunderland skins wore small rings in their noses. An oddity of fashion, like Maidstone skinheads who spent a summer in the early seventies parading around the town wearing those big plastic ears you get in joke shops. It takes all sorts".

Odd indeed! Do you originals remember other examples of people trying to come up with innovations on the look and failing miserably?

No. And don't breathe that anywhere around the revival guys or they'll all want one and swear it's authentic! [note: M-o-M is indulging in a harmless spot of irony]

Sunderland skins wouldn't have known any better. No-one had any right to be a skinhead come the 'early 70s'[IMG]

No memory of anything like that. It was all very understated and elegant.

If you were lucky you could get ex-USAF Raybans at 'surplus stores'. I had a pair of them - they lasted for years and you could practically stare into the sun. I have a modern expensive pair, they look good but are f-all practical use.

    It's such a great look...

I don't think anything has surpassed the skinhead style!

I wasn't having a go, it's okay. By the way, if you mean the three photos above, only the bottom two are of me and they're not actually that good photos. I can hardly believe we really did wear our cardigans like that occasionally.

Thanks, I was thinking I may have come accross a bit...

Has the bloke in the first photo got tattos on his forearms?

I am on the lookout for a good cardigan... Were they usally cashmere?
