Not that I want any of these played, but mentioning CeCe Peniston made me think of this list off the top,A bit of news. Yesterday I met my friend Kate Mowbray for coffee in St Andrews. She confirmed that she has decided to apply to run "Soul Shack" on STAR (St Andrews online student radio station) for the coming semester, and that she will have me back as a guest on the show several times. I shall be researching for the show, suggesting tracks to her and interfering in general! I've told her she can certainly get away with recycling all the Motown/Stax/Atlantic classics for two semesters, but she has her own ideas and has a good feel for the aesthetics of soul for a person in her mid/late 20s. I predict that we shall have some pretty decent shows to upload onto Mixcloud.
If anyone wants to make requests & dedications, or suggest tracks, please let me know. I'm open to one or two post-1970 tracks (I rather like Ce Ce Peniston's 'Finally', for example - can't sit still to it), as well as pre-soul R&B and blues to show where the genre comes from. Northern Soul is always an option, with the proviso that tracks really ought to be ones that come across well on internet radio.
I like them all but I love the unaccompanied version.Dubliners get my vote here
Some interesting stuff there. I might slip Blige in at some point, when I'm guesting. I'll have to see how Kate approaches the whole show first. Not that I want any of these played, but mentioning CeCe Peniston made me think of this list off the top,
Family Affair Mary J. Blige
Vision of Love Mariah Carey
Dream on Dreamer Brand New Heavies
Keep on Moving Soul II Soul
Come and Talk to Me Jodeci
Nights Like This After 7
Gods Gunna Cut You Down Johnny Cash,
Trash Talkin Albert Collins are a couple blues faves.

The only thing I can defend her on is, I think she can sing, not that I enjoy her whole body of works.Nooooooooo!!!!
I usually stay off music discussions as it’s so subjective but I cannot abide MJB - can’t sing, can’t dance, miserable personality, always moaning on about “pain”, looks like a camel … nothing mitigating about her and she stuck out like a sore thumb in that list of otherwise class songs!!

If I hear her on your show I will die of laughter. Still love that song though, think its a California thing. You fell for it!
This is quite true wherever you are, the difference is now everything is recorded so violence etc seems to be more common than it actually is. It was the same when i was a teen nearly 20 years ago(Chavs were the ones you had to look out for). There always seems to be a small minority of psychotic reprobates in every generation, to the point that even ancient Greeks such as Socrates was complaining about it.It's not that it's more dangerous today. It isn't.
Less violent, but everyone seems angry still. At least here. To me a little street violence has its place. Today folks run they mouth off way too much. In the 80s I remember watching how I behaved in order not to catch a quick beat down. This is quite true wherever you are, the difference is now everything is recorded so violence etc seems to be more common than it actually is. I read something profound not so long ago:Where i live has been rough for the last 30 years, I do live in a former mining area in Yorkshire though so it's to be expected. I used to be a bit more of a loose cannon in my teenage years like alot of people but even then i only had fights when all other options were depleted and even then i didn't like them or enjoy them, it was more this bully isn't going to shut up so i'm going to have to smack him one. Schoolyard stuff.
I kind of despise them now and honestly think they're bit pathetic now that i'm in my thirties, i consider myself wiser now, it also only takes one hit in a street fight and you could kill or maim someone. I get comment's off more ignorant people considering i am quite eccentric looking but I have just trained myself with Stoic principles like choosing not to feel harmed and changing my judgements, It's also not worth potentially getting arrested or imprisoned over mere words, walking away takes more strength and not stooping to the level of man-children who are out to cause trouble on the street. There isn't much point imo in starting violence just to soothe the ego, i would only defend myself now if i was directly attacked.
