Mixing fabrics

Now I am sure this is probably common sense but since I am 16, I have no clue.

The question can you have an outfit with jacket/blazer and pants of different fabrics.

Heres the story. The other night I was getting dressed to go out for dinner for my parents anniversary, I put on a pair of beige Gabardine wool pants and a navy blue flannel blazer. My mother told me it was ridiculous and that I cannot wear those two different fabrics in the same outfit. Now we wear jeans and wool blazers all the time, so is it really a sin to do this?

So is this something you cannot do, mixing fabrics. cashmere trousers with a wool jacket, cotton trousers with a wool jacket, vice versa.

This is that jacket-pant combo by the way. (the tags were blocked out because I had used the pic for something else where logos needed to be covered)

I think fabrics and textures are definitely awesome to mix and match but are a lot more advanced to do.

For example;
Colors - pretty basic once you understand the color wheels
Stripes/Windowpanes/Dots/Checks - a little more difficult but again, build upon your color wheel knowledge
etc etc...
Multicolored & multi patterned & multi textured - really difficult

In the best of styleforum they had some guys in there with stuff I couldn't even dream of putting together. I just don't "get" it.

Sure, you can mix fabrics--subject to seasonality and aesthetics. But that jacket has pinstripes and its fabric appears to be a very smooth worsted wool, suggesting it is meant to be worn as part of a suit.

It was taken off a long time ago lol. That pic was taken months ago when I bought it.

Very funny. Ugh I hate the overflow of my mother's 361 pairs of shoes.

Yes.

That "blazer", like mafoo said, appears to be an orphaned suit jacket. The pinstripes make it look very business-y. A plain navy blazer would work with those pants, but I don't believe the pinstriped jacket does. If you can throw on the outfit, including the sandals to the left, and post a pic, I think we could make a more defninitive decision.

I'll say it again: that jacket looks like a suit jacket, not a sportcoat, which is why it looks funny with those trousers.

It is a suit jacket, part of a suit, if you look close you can see the pants

I know. That's why you shouldn't wear it with unmatching trousers: it will look like an orphaned suit jacket.

So, wear it as a suit and not as an orphaned jacket.
