Mixing designer labels, a 'no-no'?

Hey all, my first post here.

I'm a hip-hop fan and tend to spend some time reading hip-hop blogs. Today I read a jab from rapper Jim Jones at Jay-Z in regards to Jay-Z's fashion sense.

With the important part being Jim Jones calling out Jay-Z on wearing a Gucci belt with an LV scarf:

"And look at the Vibe cover. Tell me who Jay-Z looks like in there? Did you see the picture of him? With the Louis Vuitton scarf and all that... he had a Gucci belt with a Louis Vuitton scarf. Who does that?... That's like wearing one Nike and one Puma; how you going to get away with that?

I had no idea that this was a fashion faux-pas! :\\

What are the general rules about 'mixing' labels?

Are there any?

1. I see no problem with that.

2. In the context of Gucci, hip-hop, etc., you'd probably be better served by the streetwear & denim subforum here than the Men's Clothing one. We tend to talk more about suits and such here.

I don't know about in hip-hop, but in the real world, wearing head-to-toe of one label is called a "Fashion Victim." Not only is it a no-no, it makes you look like an idiot who doesn't have the sense OR style to shop around and figure out what he/she actually likes.

Jim Jones sounds like he needs to stick to rapping and leave fashion to others...

Well, since I bothered to respond, I might as well add some substance. Following labels and/or being clothed in only a single label -- in general (flame suit on) -- is a sure sign of a lack of style; i.e., it shows that the wearer can only discern what to wear because the label put it all together for him. Imagination and variety come from being able to formulate one's own style rather than to be a clone of the thousands of others who are following the same designer.

The caveat is that this is not an absolute; there are times when only a given designer/label provides what a given buyer is seeking. This, however, ought to be the exception rather than the rule, so to speak. I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure hip-hop fashion operates under different rules than regular fashion. So I don't think this is the place to be asking. From what I know, it seems the norm to be dressed in one designer from head to toe if you are a rap mogul.

Nope, AFAIK.

But don't think your post will be well received in either forum. This forum is dedicated to tailored clothing while the Streetwear forum is more for, hate to put it this way, emo, hippies and amjack type of clothing.

I knew this thread would be good for a laugh when I saw Jim Jones name. If it looks good, it looks good regardless of whether they're the same or different labels. Jim Jones is just desperate to find something bad to say about jay-z. That's pretty petty.... even by hip-hop standards.

+1. Mixing designer labels is not a "no-no". In fact it is encouraged lest you be considered a fashion victim as rach said in the quote or a mannequin. If you stick around this part of the site you'll also learn that wearing such overt labeling, same brand or not, is discouraged as well.
Moral of the story: Don't take fashion advice from Jim Jones.

Except for the ring, I see no problem with this look being discussed here? And I really don't have a problem with the ring. Where's his pocket square??

I smell materialism and love of logo's. Hip-Hop/Rappers and not known for dressing well, I have yet to see any of them dress human.
