Midnight Navy Tux v Black Tux

Is there any reason to wear a midnight navy tux as opposed to a black one? Cruise wore on in MI:4 and Craig wore one in Skyfall. Is the blue the new black?

+1. Midnight blue is the classic. Just make sure it's really midnight blue. Lots of the more fashion forward ones you see lately are too light.

The only reason to wear midnight instead of black is that you like it better (which I do).

Actually, for we quasi albinos of the world (I am of the Irish extraction), even a very dark blue still soundly trumps black in the "trying to not resemble a walking corpse" category. I am grateful for every sartorial rule/custom that allows me to avoid wearing black.

I agree with the previous posters, midnight blue is a classic shade and I'm glad it's gaining popularity again. Although you can never go wrong with a black tux, they are starting to bore me a little. I actually own a midnight blue tux and have gotten more use out of it than my black tux as of late.

Just remember that it will look blue if flash-photography is used. The "Blacker-than-black" effect is due to most artificial lighting being slightly yellow.

Sorry, exists in planning only. Will probably be a 4x1 DB, side vents, grosgrain lapels. Slightly bigger lapels, with a little belly.

That's the problem... IMHO if it's even dlightly lighter than midnight blue the contrast between the jacket and lapels looks not so hot.

I find midnight blue dinner jackets work best when the event begins before the sun has set.

For that same reason, I like midnight blue trousers with an ivory dinner jacket and black tie, since certain latitudes are quite bright for evening events when ivory or cream dinner jackets are acceptable.

I think that is an amazing look I would like to have the opportunity to pull off.
