Just curious as to which shoes you shoe professionals recommend that is a mid level dress shoe. In other words something in between these two (Aldens and A.E.'s) and (Lobbs's and E.G.'s). Granted I'm sure you all will tell me that Alden and A.E.'s are a mid-level shoe. However I don't care for those two brands so much. So what do you recommend between those (in quality I mean) and the gh end shoes (Lobb and E.G.).

Thanks for your opinions....

So you want something between $300 and $1,000? There are a lot but here are a few: Crocket & Jones, Alfred Sargent, Vass, Trickers, Barker, Grenson, and probably another 20.

I own both vass and c&j handgrades. I prefer the style of vass, and it fits me better.

Have them all, and had Alden and C&J in the past. If you save (or luck out on a sale), you can get G&G, JL, EG, or Crispin's in your range. Would be my recommendation. Be sure to try them on first, they fit very differently from AE and Alden. Search the forum to better understand what each last means.

Don't forget Cleverley...RTW around 395 BPS, and 595 for Semi-Bespoke...

Fratelli Rossetti-- a brand that doesn't get much mention on this forum but makes some great shoes in the $600-$700 range.

Be careful when buying high-end shoes on deep discount. Seriously. Once you go C&J and above, you will never want to go back to AEs, regardless of whether you can afford to keep buying higher-end or not. The good stuff will spoil you really quickly.

I'd love to hear you elaborate (speaking as someone who is in the lower range and also looking forward to moving up someday)...

My point is that you can occasionally find great deals on gently used or even new high-end shoes here, but those deals are somewhat rare. If you're living on an AE budget and happen to snag some EGs, you may run the risk of liking the EGs a little too much. Ever hear the expression that one has "champagne taste on a beer budget?" That's what I mean here.
