This type of argument is always problematic--comparisons across sports and eras is impossible.

That said, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the greatest athlete of all time as potentially the greatest Olympian of all time: Jim Thorpe.

That's a good article, read that off a link from Slate or something last week.

time to put May/Walsh into this conversation. dominated 3 Olympics, only lost one set in their entire Olympic career

no its not. i wanted to start a thread that would spark a conversation about the best olympian of all time.
i think i succeeded quite nicely. im hoping for more opinions and discussion.
but why the hate always?

you post stupid things and people let it slide because you're a nice guy. this thread is stupid, as is your weird jingoistic love for baltimore. if you wanted to have a discussion you'd have titled it 'who is the greatest olympian of all time?'

i think all to often, bland titles get ignored. "oh, a thread about the greatest olympian, another olympics thread, zzzzz." sometimes you have to spark some interest by stating something that will get people to disagree, or make them stop and think for a minute, and say, "wait, is that really true?"

i heard the argument about phelps on mike and mike that morning, and thought it would be a good topic of discussion to contrast him to great olympians of the past. some people, in the sports world, and regular folks, even not from baltimore, think he is indeed the greatest, others disagree.

i think its funny that you think you have the right to disagree about what my intentions were. as if you know better than i, what i am thinking, and what my intentions are. it is a tad presumptuous.

as to bmore, i have stated on more than one occasion that its a ****** city. it is, and its a known fact. i only live here for the jewish community and my family, otherwise id be long gone.

anyhow, i dont know why you always have to hate on me so hard. a lot of it is really unnecessary. i think plenty of people call me out on my stupid things, despite what they think of me personally. you however, are the most persistent about it, even when i think it is unwarranted.

not cool.

If Usain Bolt wins the 200m today, he has to be in the conversation. Unlike the specialized skills of kayaking, swimming the butterfly, and Greco-Roman wrestling, everybody runs, which makes the competition incredibly difficult. Not to mention that the margin for error in a sprint is minute. Bolt is the first man to win the 100m in consecutive Olympics. (Carl Lewis won the gold medal in 1988 but finished second in the race.) No man has ever won the 200m in consecutive Olympics.

While impressive, it would have been more so if he had actually ran the entire race.

stitches I hate on you less than you think. And bolt is in the conversation now - wonder if he has a chance four years from now.
