Of the two books, the Reader is smaller and easier to find, and will do more to give you a richer sense of particular areas.

If you are doing Urban Studies, one must is the Map Museum. Here you can track the tremendous growth of the DF.

I will try to think of more stuff later.

Any urban studies student will have fun with the redevelopment of the Centro Historico. The center of the city langished after WWII for several reasons: the growth of the city put the edges even father out, the gov't moved the UNAM south to the University City, and the mayor capped rents, which caused landlords to abandon their properties. The decline lasted about 50 years. In this decade, telcom billionaire Carlos Slim has led a project to redevelop the center. You can read about it here: http://www.geocities.com/jonclark500/stories/ch.html One way to see how Mexico used to look is to catch the streetscapes in some old movies. One summer I watched all of the Spanish language films Bunuel did in Mexico. For a view of the city half a century ago, you might view Los Olvidados or Ilusion via en Tranvia, in which some trolleymen kidnap their own car and ride it through the night city. For a picture of what Tokyo Slim went through, check out Subida al Cielo, which in English is known as Mexican Busride. The series at NY's Film Forum a few years ago is a good Mexican Film primer: http://www.filmforum.org/films/cinemexico.html Among my favorites were Maria Candelaria and Una Familia de Tantas, as well as Enamorada and the two by Fernando de Fuentes. Many of these may play at the Cineteca Nacional, which is a great place to see movies in the summer. http://www.cinetecanacional.net/v2/index.php Regarding fashionable places to eat and drink, many of these are in the Condesa, I guess. I didn't go to many, or when I did I was already too drunk to remember their names. Gay cantinas near Bellas Artes were grungy and interesting and fun. Not sure if this is your style. For great photography of Mexican street catastrophies, check out the images of Enrique Metinides: http://arts.guardian.co.uk/critic/fe...048129,00.html The weekly guide to what's going on [similar to Time Out magazine in NY or London] is Tiempo Libre: http://www.tiempolibre.com.mx/ I bought it every week. That's it for now. Feel free to PM if you have more specific requests.

Thanks a lot (again) mack. Great information! Though not gay, I would never avoid a cantina that is grungy, interesting and fun just because the majority of the patrons have a different sexual preference. Good bars are good bars. Urban decay/redevelopment is a fascination of mine so it sounds like the DF is going to be paradise for me. It will be hard to beat my time in Seoul, Bs. As. or Bangkok but I am really getting my hopes up for this trip. I have been amazed at all the feedback I am getting about Mexico City on various forums.

The two gay cantinas I best remember are right next door to each other on Republica de Cuba. Viena and Oasis.

Details here:

Tom's Leather Bar was also amusing.

Pretty good idea. They'd probably just think you were a crazy person and move on to the next guy.

A lot of those are close to my hotel, I'll be sure to kill a few afternoons or evenings there. Anybody know what the general costs are for drinking? I have to budget my money on this trip and trips to the bar are usually my biggest expenditure and the most difficult aspect of my cost control measures to abide by. Any suggestions on good, cheap local names for booze producers? I have heard that good wine is around but can be hard to find outside of the nicer establishments, true? Don't mean to flaunt my drinking habits here but I've got to keep the ball rolling regardless of what country I'm in.

Depending on how fetching you are, you could drink for free
