Try Calle Republica de Uruguay for MTO and MTM shoes.

There are two shoe makers there amongst all the stores selling Hecho en China imports.

I should pick up my two pairs this weekend. Less than $100usd each.

Edit: the shop with the shorter last name came highly recommended.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys. Please keep them coming!

15Dollar, MTM shoes for less than 100 USD sounds pretty cool. Can you give the name of the shop? Do you have any info on construction? Be an amazing deal if it were Goodyear welted or Blake/rapid stitched.

I hope you can find the time to write up a review of the shoes. I suspect there are a good number of members who'd be interested in an MTM shoe at that price, and could make it to DF without too much trouble.

Could not remember the name, then I remembered I have the receipt in my pocket.

Address is actually 109 Rep. De Ecuador!

Antonio Gomez, fine shoes for men. They don't even have a sign out front, lady says they've been there for almost 200 years.

My shoe-Fu is weak, so I probably have my terms wrong, but I think one of the makers (the other is right across the street) does the hidden stitch where you can only see a cut going around the sole, the other has a channel where you can see the stitching.

If you want OTR Goodyear welter shoes, try Gonzalez in el centro THIS ONE is Paraguay near Eje 1.

Well, if the channel with the stitching is in the bottom of the outsole, then that sounds like Goodyear! Judging by A Harris's great "Shoes Explained" post:

Thanks for the Gonzalez tip. I will have to check them out.

Sounds like with Gomez you may have found an excellent deal!

All very interesting. I'll see what I can find out this weekend. Hopefully I can find some time to get away from the family to explore some of these stores!

Pics of the shoes, the other pair (from another shoemaker) is not worth posting ie. creased leather, stained uppers.

Came out more or less as expected, the finisher did miss the request for the natural leather sole and heel finish :brick:

Only $990 MXN (around $80.60 USD) Sorry about the low res crappy pics (cell phone, bad photog).

That [side] stitching looks horrible! Nice color though.

Pictures of the new jacket by Chris Despos while at Hacienda San Angel Inn in Mexico City! Fit in perfectly with the ambiance and the trio that was signing during dinner!

Sorry I missed this, but in case you're still there and still interested:

Bakea in Lomas Virreyes (near Polanco). Great Basque/Castilian
Taberna de Leon (in southwest near UNAM). Great experimental Mexican
San Angel Inn (Altavista, next to Diego Rivera house). Traditional Mexican, also Belle Epoque-style heavy French with a Mexican twist
Specia in Condesa. Old-style Central European. Great duck.

THanks - I'm back home now. I ended up at Puerto Madero.. steak was pretty darn great, especially considering the price. I will check the others out on my next trip.
