i am 31 years old, and for the past year have been experiencing a metamorphosis. i have gone from wearing a size 16 shirt to a size 17. my feet have grown a half size. my wrists are 1/4" thicker. my pants size is now 35, up from my usual 33. it's like a second puberty. i'm growing hair where i never had before, my beard is thicker, and my skin feels thicker and less sensitive too. i'm also getting my first grey beard hairs.

the thing is, i don't look overweight aside from a small belly. i think i'm just getting thicker, in a good way. i still exercise as much as before, so it's not a matter of just geting back in shape. my uncle says that when he turned 50, he suddenly went up a full shoe size, from 8.5 to 9.5, seemingly overnight.

i'm writing this as a warning to anyone in their late 20s who may be thinking of dropping big money on expensive clothing with the idea that they will wear these clothes for a long time. i have a closet full of custom shirts that do not fit me anymore, and when you hit 30, you may undergo this change as well.

I grew when I was around 23. Gained two waist inches, about 10 pounds. I think I was just less active, my metabolism slowed down, and I was less fit and lean. I like to eat a lot and love a great meal at a great restaurant. It's a struggle to fight that belly. My shoe size definitely didn't change or anything. I just...got fatter.

i feel perfectly healthy. if anything, this new girth feels more manly and i feel more attractive now than ever before. it's just that i've outgrown all my clothes.

besides, as the old russian saying goes, "never trust doctors, lawyers, or women."

Damn, I've put on about 30 lbs. over the years ( I love to eat), but that's not all that bad.

That's a comparison of college days, many years ago at 155lbs to now at 185lbs.

But, I've also experienced the foot growth. Till my early 40's I was a size 9 or 9 & 1/2. By my late 40's I was a 10 & 1/2! I'm now a definite size 11. I'm pretty sure that my feet have stopped growing, and I sure hope so!

I'd be interested to see if many of our other Senior members (age wise) have experienced foot growth in their late 40's and 50's?

BTW:Matadorpoeta, what you are describing doesn't seem normal. It sounds like a Barry Bonds type of thing!

I've undergone the opposite metamorphosis....without working out and still eating a cheeseburger/pizza/chinese food/ice cream diet, I've reduced my sizes in all aspects compared to 5 years ago. I'm about 3 pounds away from my target weight of 150

Over the past 8 or 9 years in my 30's, I have gone up from 155 lbs to about 180 lbs currently. My shoe size has also increased from 11 to 12. I also have substantially more white hairs now than I used to, to the point where my wife recently commented that I look old if I wear a baseball hat (where just my grey/white temples are visible.)

I think this is pretty common as your metabolism slows down and you age.

In earlier years, I underwent my first radical change at age 25. Went from being 6'2", 170 lb to 195 lb just about overnight. Also went from being able to eat anything in any quantity and not gain weight to just looking at food and gaining weight. Normal part of aging and metabolism slowing down.

Now at the age of 51 after wearing a 12D all my adult life, I suddenly need a 12EE.

As I grow older I've come to realize an important fact: Gravity sucks!

I'm too young to have experienced any of this, but I wonder if perhaps some (not all, but some) of the increase in shoe size experienced by various members could be due to falling arches or some such thing, not an actual increase in foot size all around.

aside from the feet and hair growth, i think the rest is normal ageing. i have an old acquaintance who grew by a foot before going to a doctor who found out his glands were producing abnormal amounts of something, and if left without medical procedure would damage his heart. I strongly suggest you go see a doctor.

I dont know about the women part but the other two make sense.

About those changes, you might want to make sure that fly in your lab doesnt get away.

"One morning Gregor Samsa awoke to find himself transformed into a flamboyant dandy."

So much for sartorial angst and with apologies to Kafka.

When I was 25 I could wear a size 32 pant and when I was 26 I no longer could do so. This was despite no gain in weight.

Since then my weight has remained the same, my beard has greyed considerably, more hair has grown on my body but all of my clothing still fits. That is a good ten year period, and I do not look forward to it changing.

what age jump do you think has the most pronounced and uncontrollable change, genetics-wise...assuming one eats well etc during all those years

20s - 30s, or 30s - 40s?
