After slogging masochistically through the oxfords/casual threads and the “is the tie dead” threads, and “CM without standing out threads”, I’ve concluded that SF’s binary split into CM and SWD is driving CM into a place of either tiresome argument threads about style orthodoxy, or fandom threads about various makers. I find unfunded liabilities and bespoke projects to be continuously fun and useful, but that’s getting to be about it.

Maybe it is time for a friendly divorce in CM. Split it into something like this:
  • Classic Menswear: for purists. conservative business dress, no brown in town, Apparel Arts drawings, the Brummell rule (don’t let John Bull notice you the street). Advice for beginners.

  • Tailored Menswear: discussion of tailoring, but without rules and constraints. A place for experimentation and innovation in outfits with tailoring. Aesthetics divorced from tradition. Requires accepting that an object or outfit can be both beautiful and new.

  • Fandom: maker/brand appreciation threads, affiliate threads.
This split would allow those of like mind to enjoy and take inspiration from fit pics, etc. without having to grind through page, after page, after page of the same people talking past each other endlessly repeating their argument with different words.

I think that would be fruitful. The fandom section might be particularly useful as it allows those brands which straddle the divide to not be restrained by one section.

Completely agree. “The sneakers with Tailoring” thread that lasted 1600+ responses, that shouldn’t have been more than 1 page, sealed it for me.

Yeah, too many threads and no reason to further segment an already tiny group. I've also dropped all the affiliate threads and weird ones like the "Oxford with Chinos." Just stick to a few now.

A useful tool for me would be a way to block all personal classifieds from showing up.
I don't want anyone's old clothes or shoes.

Yeah, that new ad feature is annoying.

I don't think splitting CM into the first 2 would accomplish much, people would still argue whether something looked good or not because of historical precedence or coherence or something similar in probably BOTH of the new versions. You can't really have tailoring discussions without some historical baggage, unless maybe if you just claim to be some other aesthetic (e.g. streetwear) with its own rules.
However, I do think fandom threads should be split out, I get bored of having to skip past 20 threads that are only about posting photos of new shoes from a given brand.

I see 307 members online at 2:30pm Central on a weekday. That seems pretty substantial. Unless they are all in SWD.
Based my comment on the people who post regularly. Seems like the same folks across the CM forums.
