The track and field/timbuk2/chrome ones are nice and everything, but i wouldn't be able to get a good variety of uses for them since i'd like it to go from casual to respectable. If there aren't that many ones at online clothing stores or good department stores, I guess i'll have to do the hoping to get lucky at thrift stores/ebay thing.

I agree. You're asking for trouble.

They're better than a one-shoulder laptop bag or a backpack thrown over one shoulder, though. The only thing much better than a messenger bag for hands-free carrying is a backpack on both shoulders.

I have a bad upper back, and I get away with it by keeping the messenger bag relatively light and switching shoulders regularly.

I have a Tumi flap bag, not the most stylish bag or anything, but it's very practical... I like it coz it's got pen pockets for my fountain pens...

My first one actually broke after 4 months and the Tumi store just gave me another one...
