Starting a new job where I'll be working with a lot of higher level people and dealing face to face with our client, so I want to make sure to make a good impression. Will be wearing with both business casual and business formal wear. Would like something I can wear with a variety of colors. Deciding between 2 Tumi briefcases.
    Option 1:

very functional, lots of useful pockets, easy design so you don't have to take your laptop out at the airport, just unzip the bag (i will be doing lots of travel), but not leather

    option 2:

no easy laptop zipper, but other than that still quite functional. not as many pockets, but is leather, is also $150 more, paying for the leather and sleeker look.

    any thoughts?

Give Linjer a look. Much better looking and less expensive.

really? any ideas on others under $500? I haven't found any at all that are functional, high quality, professional, but not too flashy...

Take a look at these. Made in USA (SF).
I bought quite a few things from this company when i was on stricter budget and honestly the construction quality is great. I have a ballustic nylon messenger bag from them that is now 12 years old and still looks new (other than scratches on the buckle).
I have also bought numerous other items from them (mainly organizing pouches) and I have never once had a quality issue after extensive use over many years.
At the under 500 dollar range they are hard to beat.
Tumi stuff is good, and have also had their bags but IMO the quality of sfbags is much better and also cheaper.

Take a look and see if they fit your style.

Black leather in the price range you are looking often looks cheap in my opinion. It tends to be corrected grain with a finish and looks a bit plasticky. Brown will be more versatile and will have the added benefit of gaining a patina over time that will make it look even better. I have a La Portegna bag from No Man Walks Alone that is lovely. Linjer is well regarded on the board as well.

If you are set on black then maybe try and find something in Saffiano leather. I am personally not a great fan of it, but at least it wont look like plastic. And if its good inough for Hermes to use occasionally then I guess its tolerable...
