Well, given that we do have a lot of actual lawyers here, I'd like to see what the take on sysdoc's claim is. For some reason, it seems like making the conscious decision to post one's own work on a publicly viewable website constitutes whatever the legal phrase for "letting the cat out of the bag" is, so to speak. It's not like anyone here ever intended to sell his content or pass it off as his own, so I'd honestly like to see what kind of leg he has to stand on.

That said, he was definitely a good poster before the drama got started, but this kind of nonsense is just pathetic. If big shot international publishers really think it's all right to behave like spoiled children, then I guess I'm glad I never considered that career avenue.

Actually that mirror-shine article didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, so yeah it can probably be deleted at no risk.

Any Google search for "spit shine" will bring up loads of guides written by Armed Forces dudes about mirror-polishing their dress shoes and they all sound like sysdoc's guide.

Anyways, he should be locked out of SF. If we can't benefit from his "intellectual property" then he shouldn't be able to benefit from ours.

I'm going to miss his contributions, but I think he's acting like a child that won't let others look at his toys because he didn't get his way. Maybe I missed something, but to punish everyone for the actions of a few is infantile behavior, especially when any offending comments were made on a medium like an internet forum.

To go back and edit your owns posts so as to remove all the pictures is insane. What surprises me is that this behavior is coming from someone that has obviously done very well for themselves in life, and who you'd think would be a bit more level-headed by necessity.

I'm curious, why is he requesting this? What has so offended him that he feels his contributions need to be erased? They were great, and I was particularly looking forward to the Janne post. Oh well.
I wanted to stay out of this, but...

You'd have to ask him specifically, but all I know is that he never missed a chance to take something personally, overreact and make very rude comments to people in public and private. I can't be the only one who saw that. I don't care how awesome someone's posts are, it's no excuse to be a total prick to people.

Too bad we can't have his great posts back without the mean attitude.

Well, if it's any consolation for those that find the mirror shine guide useful and want it for future reference, all you have to do is cut and past the info into a word document for your personal use. Granted it won't be available to new members if it's removed, but that's not going to prevent them from getting info on how to shine their shoes.

That is what I did. [IMG]

Regardless of what happened and how it happened, it is a shame to lose Thomas' good information.
Yes, it is, and yes, I'll miss a lot of his illustrated posts.

Nevertheless, I think that what miffed some people (including me) in this thread is the tone of his e-mail. That would have been understandable (if unappropriate) for, say, a second or third communication on the subject with an administrator refusing to remove those messages. But, in the very first request, threatening to sue? That is preposterous.

subj: intellectual property and the legal implications

    Dear J,

I am politely asking you to totally remove my mirror shine guide from the SF wiki. The same goes for those of my pictures that happen to still show in postings of other members. I'm sorry for having to remind you that the articles as well as pictures are my intellectual property. I do not want said items to be available to others through SF anymore.

Please understand that I happen to be the owner of an international publication. We have lawyers that deal with copyright violations on a daily basis. I would hate it, should you force me to pick up the phone and get in touch with them.

I hope that we can move on from here. Just see me as one of many posters that never provided anything of essence and that never took away anything from you as well.

Naturally, I wish you all the very best.

    Thomas aka //sysdoc//

Oh, well. In my ten months (pre and post server crash) as a member of Style Forum, I truly enjoyed //sysdoc//'s many informative, exciting threads and posts. One would have thought he was above the bitterness and sarcasm so evident in his remarks.

However, this reminds me of watching a child take his toys home from the sandbox when the game didn't go his way. He knows his toys are essential to some degree.

J, make certain that none of the Style Forum sand is carted away in //sysdoc//'s shoes. You don't want to have your attorneys chasing after sand!

//sysdoc//, thanks and goodbye . . . but, you're not only kid with nice toys.

    Respectfully, et blithering cetera

If the sum of our life was measured by the knowledge we had and shared, the money we made, and the shoes we owned; then Sysdoc would probably have a PhD.

Fortunately, we are also measured by how we interact with others, adapt to life's curve balls, and forgive those who trespass against us.

Reminds me of the movie Big...little man in a big man's body.

I don't see how j has any responsibility for the content of the wiki. He didn't make it and so far as I know, hasn't added any content to it. If sysdoc is pissed about the wiki content, he can sic his international lawyers on me. But he should think twice about that. Chuck Norris wouldn't approve.

    Wow. This is beyond childish.

I am getting a bit delusional about the forum. I mean, it is an awesome forum, but the way some people behave and just pick on others is ridiculous. But this, THIS request is like... uber-childish.

Maybe I should just laugh about it, but frankly, it's *way* pathetic.

Agree - Sysdoc contributed tons of great posts, and he was very helpful to me answering some shoe questions via PM, but it was frankly embarassing to see him act like such a baby over and over again. I also noticed that he dangled the veiled threat of removing his posts the last few days before he finally left, suggesting that his own content was more valuable than that contributed by Gabor and AHarris. He also made a huge stink about Aportnoy's temporary absence and seemed to think he could use it to start a mutiny when Andrew himself had the tact and maturity to remain silent on the matter, or at least handle it privately. When Steve finally reminded him to "not let the door hit you on the way out," I can say it echoed my sentiments exactly. Grow up already!

Again, I realy, truly appreciated the Sysdoc's posts, but nothing excuses that kind of behavior.

Re-read Sysdoc letter and remember folks, this is how you're seen by others when you can't get over yourself.

I don't know what sysdoc's claim is to the mirror shine for I did not read that thread. To those who want to use my method and I declare this the Style Forum, Senior Member, Free for everyone within the universe to use,
    mirror shine technique.
Simply steal one of your wife, girlfriends or sisters nylon stockings and finish your shine with it. Silk works better.
J, just for the record. I declare that any information I share with you or the Style Forum is free for your use except what I ate last night and what I'm wearing now!

    Best Regards,

    Gary
