This, I think, says something about the quality of Christy hats. This one is a navy, fur felt, unlined, medium brim, trilby. It is of the 'all the year round' variety. I got in the car without my hat on. Drove for about half hour, got out again and saw that I had been sitting on it. The bash was a bit...well... bashed but I very quickly got into shape again, without the need for any steaming. The ribbon stayed in place and the whole thing was back to normal. I'll take your word for true without testing my hat this way ...
Funny thing, I chose Christy's as my first hat just because I liked its shape and colours, and because it came for cheap (everybody knows I'm a scrooge), but your comments had me be even happier with my choice.
What I wouldn't have said is that quality hats can be comfortable to sit on too!

Thanks, Luigi. Christys make good Panama hats, too. The one I have just bought is the Jack Snap trilby, at £39 (!), a sale price. I just like the way it looks and feels on your head. I know that it is possible to pay $25,000 for Panamas (no, really!) but sometimes you can have fun with much cheaper ones. It is a real Panama, too and not just a paper or rough straw one. Nor is it a 'beach holiday' or 'party' hat. Christys make more expensive ones too but nothing approaching a quarter of a million! I certainly wouldn't sit on one like that.

$25,000 for Panamas (no, really!)

I too read that Munky, but I think that owning such an expensive hat would completely defeat the purpose of having one. I mean, if I had a Panama of that kind, I'd keep it in a climatized glass case, guarded h24 by Guardie Svizzere, rather than wearing it.

I wonder who buys a hat for a quarter of a million dollars? If you were famous or generally in the public eye, presumably most people would just notice that you are famous and move on - not really seeing your hat. I suspect that most people who are not famous, do not have their hats noticed very much. You would, I think, have to be a very dedicated and well versed Panama lover, to notice that someone was wearing one of these. Perhaps just knowing that you are wearing one is enough for those rich enough to buy one. Personally, I would be going round in mine with a sandwich board saying: "I am wearing a hat that cost a quarter of a million dollars!" With kind thoughts, Munky.

PS. No one can deny that these are very, very beautiful hats, made by true artists. Even Mr Black has (I think) said that a particularly beautiful one belongs in a museum. It would certainly be a wonderful cultural artifact.

If I were a CEO that had fired a lot of people and made my compensation, at least for the current year, jump to $50 million, I'd pay $250K for a black leopard scrotum hair hat that is totally unique. I'd wear it everywhere, never take it off. Of course i'm kidding. Maybe not. I'd be the cat in the cat nut hat. That might get me Kardashian level fame.

I know people that are willing to pay $2,500 for a custom Bowie Knife (hand-forged and differentially tempered to their personal specifications). There's a "vintage" Randall Bowie that's selling for this price on either eBay or Amazon for this amount.

If you can afford it, I guess it is okay. After you pass away, no one but an expert or aficionado will know what it is by just looking at the item.
