I'm by no means an expert, but this is the third hat band I've made myself, and I took some photos of the process, for anyone interested.

I used the hat's original band as a template. The first pictures attempt to show how the ribbon is folded back on itself to form the bow.

To get the length right, I pinned the ribbon around the crown.

The horizontal, and vertical, pinches make the top edge of the band a smaller circumference than the bottom, so the band telescopes with the crown.

Nice job with the band my friend!
Thanks! I really like how much it dresses down the hat. Yesterday I started the day in penny loafers, chinos, blue OCBD, grey v-neck sweater, and navy blazer. By the end of the day, I'd discarded the jacket and sweater, and the hat looked spot on. With the plain navy band, it really doesn't work so casually.

surprised this thread has not seen more activity lately with the proliferation of hats on celebs and the sartorialist. here's one of my recent additions, an Art Fawcett featherweight beaver fur fedora:

Fantastic!

Art does great work. The hat looks great on you. The proportions work well. I think fuller, less tapered crown makes that a very attractive hat.
Did Art style it or had you defined what you wanted?

Beautiful hat. I'm debating between getting this or a Brent Black Hemingway.

Agreed. I like Panamas anyway but the proportions of this between crown and brim seem just about perfect.

My most recent from Art Fawcett. Granite felt w/ near tone on tone ribbon and binding. Sorry for the lousy photos.
