My wife, growing up in the UK, wore a straw boater in the Spring with a tie and blazer at her all girls school. From the photos it was a cute look.

Yep, that is relatively common, only for the English public school.

    Hater's going to hate.
They are a bit fashion forward, but they fit, and the ones I've owned have lasted despite daily abuse.

Agree with Lefty on the Goorin Brothers. But if all one has to compare them with is Target hats they would seem to be better hats.
Once you get a proper Fedora from a good hatter or vintage you see why they are so bad real fast. Its more of an education one has to under go just like with all the other pieces of clothing one buy's.

I don't think I've ever seen a straw boater in the wild, on either side of the pond, outside of costume parties and barbershop quartets. I think to all intents and purposes they are dead. I also can't think of a single occasion to wear one in today's world where a well made and shaped panama wouldn't be a better choice, QED the photo above.

They're frequently seen at the Henley Royal Regatta and other rowing events. If you're in the city of London (CBD etc), it'd only be natural that you don't see people wear such hats. Brits tend to dress to the occasion. However, to wear it anywhere else might seem a little costume-y, and rightly so, especially if the choice of clothing isn't occasion-appropriate.

Being 'fashion-forward' is a different matter.

It's also worn by students at Harrow School, and by students for certain events at Eton College (similar to Andover and Exeter).

Not impossible; just for advanced players only in very specific situations.

Or chicks. Women can pretty much pull off any hat.

No - those posted by Mr. Monty, esp. the one with the fella in the boater next to the fella in the panama.
FWIW I much prefer the hat you are sporting to the one worn by Mr. Spade. I think there's an invisible threshold for brim width, beyond which unless you're on horseback the effect of the hat wanes drastically.

As per Boating hats, they can be executed well. Vox has a picture wearing one.

But can't we use your argumenet for most things in SF? I mean who besides us need Seersucker suits, raw silk ties or cufflinks in general?

And as I recall it looked like a costume in that pic. I'm sure he was aware of that but simply didn't care.

Anyway ... dead horse. Here's Harold Lloyd in his most famous scene. With boater.

Vox wears a lot of great stuff. That boater isn't one of them. It is a rare guy who can pull one off unless he is playing the banjo at a pizza parlor or is part of the Barber Shop Quartet in Disneyland.

This guy was at the Cable Car Styleforum Meetup last night and I thought he looked pretty good. I think wearing it with a blue jacket and not seersucker or a tan suit helps.

Purchased my first hat this year since I was tired of traveling to New York and DC in the winter and wearing knit beanies. Afterwards, I realized that a hat is perfect on the high 50s, low 60s days that we call winter in San Diego.

Because the consensus seems to be that its difficult to match the quality of hats from a half century ago except at much higher prices, I went the ebay route:

    Malllory, grey with brown ribbon:

    Resistol Dark Chocolate:

Most recent purchase, vintage Tulcan Supernatural Panama; hat is gorgeous but brim is wider than anything I've worn. May go back on ebay.
