The answer to this could likely be a dissertation.

Not wanting to spend the time or thought?
Not wanting to spend the money?
Holding onto false stereotypes of what is considered manly (depending on locale?)
The idolization of casualization?
They have bad taste?

My colleagues wear polyester fleeces and polyester polo shirts. I should feel superior in my Smyth and Gibson Royal Oxford in Albini fabric and Cordings Chinos. However I am modest and humble with humility.

Unless your colleagues are wearing these polyester fleeces and polos. Polyester no longer equals cheap or bad taste.

I try to put things in perspective.
To a car aficionado I drive boring cars. I don't drive a lot and I care most about a reliable inexpensive car with good fuel economy.
To a wine lover I probably make many terrible choices.
This is a clothing forum so we all care about clothes.

Most people aren't interested in dressing up for work . They go there to get the job done preferably as quickly as possible and go home.
In this time period, if men are bothered at all about fashion or spending money on clothes it is for their "going out" wardrobe which is their clothes they wear out in the evening at the weekend, to a bar, club or restaurant , or whatever.
I guess this is particularly true of younger men, older guys often start daytime dressing to try and "look the part" when they get promoted to management level. But even then this is often just a token effort like tucking their shirt in and wearing shoes instead of trainers.
