Okay, I seem to hate all cologne and 99% of perfumes. Once in a blue moon I step into an elevator with somebody and I say "damn, that's nice" but 99 times out of 100 I say "What the hell is wrong with this woman". It seems that with cologne that 1% gap is closed. I've never smelled one I like, but I like the idea of wearing cologne. I smelled every cologne(much to the dismay of the saleswoman) at Nordstrom and I didn't like any. What do you recommend?

I have a friend who works in this business (matching cologne or perfumes to a particular person), it is not about the smell you like, it is about the smell that other people perceive on you. In other words, It is how the smell works for you.

You will not know what works for you - because from your perspective your own farts may smell reasonable, but others that have the displeasure to smell them will disagree wholeheartedly.

Every good department store should have someone trained to match perfume to a particular person. Find that person and get their opinion. If you are genuine, they will take the time out. On your own or with a salesperson, you have no chance of picking out a decent cologne (because the smell you like best may not be the best choice for you). Bottom line, none of us can suggest a good cologne for you, what works for me may not work for you.

Don't "smell" a variety of colognes back-to-back, either on paper or, even worse, from the atomizer. Go on Basenotes, browse for a while, and make a list of colognes you'd like to try. The upper-scale department stores will usually have a nice variety of scents; pick one fragrance, apply to your skin (not clothes) and see how it wears on you for the rest of the day. Don't impulse buy cologne, especially if all you've done is smell the top notes.
