Congratulations, you scored a 1949 peacoat. Many of us feel the finish on these coats is the nicest of any of the contracts. I have a 1949, and it has a better finish than my other 14 peacoats.

Hello Peacoat.
Do you think this peacoat is the 1949 also,
is this true?
What oz weight would it be?
Is it Kersey wool?
Would be good to know about it,
can you help?

The contract specs are very light,
has numbers ???? 30185 B.
Would be good to know the weight if you can find out.
The drawback of this peacoat is it is restrictive when lifting arms in the air,
low armholes or something??
Great when walking normally.

Took a long time to find one like this.
Surprised if it is only 32 oz,
friend who knows a lot said it might have been 34 oz.

It will be the heavy shell in all of the peacoats up until 1980. Probably right around 32 to 34 oz.

Thank you.
Also owned a wonderful 1970's peacoat that was about the same weight that was given to a friend.
That 70's coat would have been melton wool wouldn't it?

Have read all you posts years ago at fedora lounge.

Probably would have been Kersey unless marked otherwise.

I had a question or two about the weight of the peacoat. I said I thought it was about 32 or 34 oz. I may have been on the heavy side. The 1930 uniform regs call for a 30 oz. cloth. Somewhere I have the 1942 regs. Not sure the weight is specified in those regs or not.

For comparison, the 1988 specs call for a 22 oz. cloth. This is the "current issue" Melton shell peacoat. That's why I don't recommend this version of the peacoat.

Hello all,

I’m just wondering what the SF consensus is on striped peacoats. I already have a navy one, and I was thinking about wearing this one.

Any guidance would be highly appreciated.

I think this a bit of a Frankenstein, the pea coats I’ve seen have ulster collars not peak collars.

This looks like a mash up of a suit and pea coat...

To be sincere, I don't like it at all: not only the stripes but the cut, it's like a weird double-breasted jacket with hand warmer pockets. If you go to the details, the stripes of the collar don't match the ones on the right side of the peaked collar.

I don't like it one bit. There is a substantial stretch of the imagination to call this a peacoat.

Interesting point which I had totally missed about ulster collars. These are definitely plain peak lapels.

I hadn’t even noticed the issue with stripes not matching on both sides of the lapel. Very well pointed out. Thank you.

Thank you very much for the kind remarks. I don’t think it would be seeing any wear.

Too big for me, plus I have 15 peacoats and have run out of room for them. My wife says, "No more."

1958 was a good year for peacoats. The US Navy tag was in use, having started in about 1956. It went until 1965, the longest running of all the tags.

I would wait to list it until cool weather has made its appearance. No one much is looking for a peacoat today, and you won't get much for it.

Hello, new here. About a year ago I purchased the Sterlingwear peacoat which I am quite fond of. The fit, construction, everything. However, as I understand, the WW2 kersey one is a more water and wind resistant, thus warmer. Do you think that I should sell my Sterlingwear and buy the kersey one or will I be good with mine? @Peacoat, would love to hear your advice as well
