meeting with secretary of state

The university I attend has invited Dr Rice for a "conversation", which will be held in our center for the performing arts. This will basically be her speaking briefly followed by questions and discussion. I have been to this venue infrequently, and only for performances of the musical arts variety. From what I remember, men generally wore tuxes... but this is a completely different event. What would be appropriate to wear for meeting with the secretary of state... I can't say this has ever happened to me before but I'd assume it would be the same for meeting with any distinguished speaker.

OK. It's a university, And there will be a lot people. If you wear a tie, you will probably stand out. A tux would be way too much. Even a suit might be out of place. Wear a suit if you want to. Otherwise, odd jacket and trousers, and informal tie, will be fine.

So you're just going as a spectator? If so, I think coat and tie is plenty. If you're presenting, a suit would be my choice.

I just re-read the OP. If you are just in the audience, go in something respectable, but no need to get dressed up. My advice stands if you are actually meeting her.

I went to the WH twice in the past year to meet with Harriet Miers. WOre a suit and bowtie both times. I would highly suggest a suit.

Dress should be Republican-Trad, lapel pin obligatory. Failing that, white tie, or texas tuxedo.

As its not a personal audience or one on one, I wouldn't go out of my way to appear different than on any other day. After all, you'll just be another face in the crowd (with all due respect).
