After much time spent longing after Meermins, but not ready to make the splurge, I unexpectedly won a pair of seconds on the bay. Am now waiting for them to arrive. Double monks in dark brown as well, apparently the defect is a slight nick on the covering piece. Am pretty excited. :)

Good for you. I've seen many meermin's second recently on ebay too. Unfortunately not my size. The defects are mostly little indeed.

I just received yesterday (4/15) a pair of dark brown oxfords I ordered on 2/26. I think the shoes are nice. I also own a pair of monks from Meermin as well. The oxfords seem to have much thinner leather than the monks and my AE PA's. Is the thinner leather any indicator that the shoe is more fragile or delicate? If I want this shoe to be a workhorse shoe worn a couple times a week will the shoe wear too quickly?

I'm not an expert on shoes but I would say when I go to Nordstrom and feel the leather on say Bruno Magli's or Too Boot NY's, the leather feels similar - soft and thin. On the opposite end of the spectrum, my AE's are stiff and thick. From what I've read Bruno Magli's will wear quickly and not last very long because of the leather being this way. I'm just a little concerned that the same will happen to my new Meermin's.

Agreed, though red is quite prominent in sunlight.

I am looking at these wholecut oxfords, which are priced way lower than any similar shoe Ive seen. I like the clean lines of wholecut shoes and since it will be my first serious shoe, I want it to be versatile enough for formal functions. Can anyone comment on the fitting and lasting? I am around a US 11, although I do wear a 10.5 in certain slim, athletic shoe styles like onitsuka tigers

Just took delivery of LM black wholecuts in New Ray after 7-8 weeks' wait and a black belt.

Personally don't mind the wait, but I will be sending both products back. Wholecuts fit reasonably well - sized up from normal UK8.5 to UK9 as per Meermin's advice. Lacing still bit too open. Also no QC issues, very nicely finished throughout, sole especially. BUT, New Ray, at least in that wholecut model is a pretty ugly last I have to say. I like continentally styled shoes, especially a chisel toe (which I know New Ray doesn't claim to be), but that shoe/last is just ugly. Too pointy, and the vamp is appears very high, perhaps exaggerated by the three pairs of eyelets which are too far apart.

Belt was too short (brought a 32inch for my 31 inch waist), but more importantly too wide (at least 1.5 inch) and the buckle doesn't look very refined.

All in all, good quality, great value, but lacking in refined style, IMO. Now waiting for the Ilcea MTO to see how Olfe (in normal size) compares to New Ray. I will probably still order from Meermin, but just be cautious when ordering New Ray. Come on Meermin, time for a true chiseled last!

Can post some pics if anyone is interested.

    Hi there.

It's New Rey* (Rey translates to king in spanish). Besides that, having looked at previous pictures of the last, I couldn't agree with you more. The toebox should be wider. The slope is too steep from the 'little toe' to the edge of the toebox. I'm looking forward to see the below mentioned styles in Olfe in brown calf become part of their RTW (probably never will though). I can't see any last that resembles an elegant chiseled toe in their selection. Ben and Ama have potential but I haven't seen any pictures of them. I also suspect that they're too wide.

I am considering the Ama, which seems a little less long and point compared to the new rey. thoughts?

A soft squared toe is something between a round toe and a chiseled toe. It might work. Be sure to add pictures when you receive them. Preferably from a birds-eye perspective so that one get a good notion of how the last looks.

Alright boss. Any last or style from their current RTWselection that you find attractive?

    Kind regards,
    Johan.

Meermin does not have a chisel toe last.
