Hello Gentlemen,

This is my first posting here and I was hoping I might derive some benefit from the collective experience of a few folks here. I recently moved from a. nonprofit work environment (I was surrounded by guys in polos, khakis and the faux dress shoe sneakers) to a fed government office that basically directs US economic policy. As you can probably guess, it's ever so slightly more conservative in terms of dress. Though I was accustomed to wearing dress trousers and collared shirts, most of my colleagues wear suits. I am looking to add a suit or two in the $500 range, though that is not set in stone. I have pretty much decided that a medium gray suit and a black suit are what I wish to buy. I am 6 feet tall about 185 lbs with a build that is athletic to average. I want something that is modern, simple and preferably slim-fitting. I would consider MTM as I have seen people here are fans of Thick as Thieves though I am at the very outside limit of their sizing (42). Thank you again for taking the time to look at this and I hope to be able to contribute here for some time.

Cheers,

MG

Howdy.

Steer clear of a black suit, good for funerals and nights out but not for the office. Just because everyone else is in a black suit doesn't mean you should get one - in fact there's a good reason NOT to get one.

I'd go for solids to start with, a charcoal grey and a navy blue would be perfect for the government office environment. Sober, smart and you'll stand out subtly from all those black suits.. Pair with decent white shirt, ties I'm sure you already have and some nice black shoes and your done.

Finaly have a look at the what are you wearing right now thread (WAYWRN) for a bit of inspiration..

Bon chance.

With the way the economy is going right now maybe that explains all the black in the office

For your needs, hard to go wrong w/ a couple of BB regents or fitzgeralds. Right now 2 for 1500 (sometimes cheaper), good selection of colors and sizes. Once you have that in your rotation, you can worry about hunting for those SF bargains or tweaking your look. Don't even think about MTM until you've been regularly wearing suits for a while, have a better sense of your style preferences, and can articulate what you're missing in RTW.
