I feel like over the course of the last year or so I've completely switched to wear knit ties (mostly silk, but also some cotton, wool, etc) and never really reach for my regular ties. I've sold off most of my regular ties and mostly just enjoying wear knits on the rarer occasions that I actually reach for a tie. Even with suits, I love the more casual, nonchalant aspect of knit ties.

I don't mind knits either. That and woven ties are the only ones I'll wear. I've seen some really nice prints before, but for some reason just can't stand to wear them.

Hermes is the one exception, as they still manage to make ties that tie the way I like.

I always go for green/olive when it comes to casual stuff, with brown as a close second, but my wife has, rightly, started to make fun of me and comparing my style with an (authorised) militia man...
Thankfully my partner has yet to make that connection, but it's definitely something I'll see now. Thanks for that 😂

@pasadena man As a fellow local, you will understand this ref. The wedding was at the Langham in the Huntington Ballroom too.
Hmm. Cargo Pants at a specified black tie wedding at the Langham. Very regrettable. I can visualize a world in which the gentleman would have been escorted from the ballroom to the San Marino County line; not for crimes against fashion, but for crimes against basic propriety.

i think that knee high socks with shorts look is a bit of a novelty unless you are in a place where it is part of the culture like bermuda.

go ahead and wear leather shoes with shorts. Allen Edmonds is pushing the whole oxfords with no socks and shorts look (one I used to love a couple of decades ago). I don’t know if I would call it “classic menswear” but it’s a good look if you have the places to pull it off.

sports coat with shorts? Sure, if the climate calls for it. However that’s sort of an odd combination because usually if one is dressing for slightly cooler weather they would add the trousers before the sports coat. But for the situations where it may generally be warmer and cool off, the jacket makes an easier transition than changing pants.

Yeah, agree on the jackets. I wonder how they are doing since (I assume) being separated from Brooks Brothers? They used to make the Italian 1818 suits at least. Are they still part of the group that just lost Brooks?

I liked this piece:

Spitting image of an overcoat Paul Newman wears in Torn Curtain - which I happen to be watching right now. Looks like flap or jetted pockets though.
