Not at all. I wouldn't consider myself a watch enthusiast, but I've been looking for a casual watch to wear with my (ahem) workwear, so I've been spending more time at Hodinkee, Worn&Wound, and a few watch forums. The videos at Hodinkee, I think, are a nice way to get a casual view of another community's hobby.

This is a terrible time to introduce this, given the above conversation's focus on class insecurities, but C. Barker, former editor-in-chief of The Rake, just launched his new project, Billionaire

what an awful name.

Geez, I just had to cheat a saleswoman again. I got a quite nice pair of cotton herringbone chinos, with a narrow leg opening (7.5") and she insisted on hemming them at shoe heel height, no matter how much I told her I wanted them shorter. I had to move the pin myself when she wasn't looking!

Perhaps it would have been more intelligent to just pick them up and hem them myself but I'm afraid of the results

Do you find yourselves doing this kind of stuff often?

Given C's interest in bespoke tailoring, this could be a publication very worth following. There is an article in this issue on Kathryn Sargent.

Derek, come clean. You timed this on purpose.

You're lucky then. I guess I didn't say the magic words, "hem it at my desired length or I won't buy"

I don't think there's ever a good time to introduce something named Billionaire (though, I'm hardly one to criticize someone for picking a bad name for a website).

Side note for those who might be interested in watches, I thought this thread was pretty neat. Some guy inherits an old watch. Turns out to be the only known one of its kind, and was exclusively issued to African-American Tuskegees in the early US Army Air Forces. The original manufacturer apparently now wants to take photos of it for their vanity book.

I don't get watches at all. Like, the whole thing. When I see people obsessing over watches, I start to understand how normal people feel when they see me obsessing over clothing.

i am not going to get into the watch debate, and the values they hold, and the comparison between fine watches and fine tailoring.

but i will say, your post makes me sad. i have to rethink my DC meetup plans.
