What is the general rule for much can you take in a pair of trousers without ruining the silhouette?

In the broadest terms 2-3 inches is the maximum, but it's highly dependant on the cut of the trousers and how much the seat needs to come in. I've had great success with reducing waist size by as much as 4", but I've got a rather large butt and muscular thighs, so the seat only needs to come in 1 - 1 1/2". Seek the opinion of a well qualified tailor - as anything more than the 2-3" may result in the trousers needing to be recut.
