I know this may be a tall order, but I don't really want to spend over $1000 and am in desperate need of a new mattress (no box spring; I have slats).

I don't know a damn thing about mattresses but I do know that I have been using a cheap mattress for about two years and coincidentally, my wife and I have been getting the worst sleep of our entire lives in the past month or so....maybe the mattress has finally 'given way'?

Either way, I don't know the first thing about reputable lines/brands. Any advice? It would be much appreciated!

STAY AWAY FROM SLEEPY'S. I personally have been baited and switched and they are laughing at me still. I filed complaints with the Department of Consumer Affairs and Sleepy's never responded, and they (DCA) did nothing. Only afterwards did I do a Google on Sleepy's Complaints and got this... http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...27s+complaints My wife and I both dread going to sleep.

I actually would recommend Sleepy's. I went to about four different places in the area, and Sleepy's had the largest selection and the best price. I was able to get a Chattam & Wells that was previously a floor model for less than half price. It normally cost close to $2000. For some unknown reason, it has some cashmere woven into the mattress surface (seems silly since this is always under the sheets), but it's amazingly comfortable. At my parents' home, I have a Serta, which is also an amazing mattress. The usual brands, Serta, Sealy, etc. are all good. If you like foam mattress, try a Tempurpedic. They had mattresses that cost over $10,000 and had hand-woven covers at the Sleepy's I visited. Really, just try all the ones in your price range. Don't just plop down for a minute or two; once you narrow it down, see if you can actually fall asleep. It's really not something you want to have to replace in two or three years. Also, you can haggle, just as if you are buying a car. Many of the chains will have identical models of Sealy or Serta, but they have different names. If you do a google search, there's a website that tells you which models are identical. Hope this helps.

And like I mentioned in the first post, spend a few minutes doing your due diligence with that google link before you walk into a sleepy's. I wish someone would have directed me there as well.

PS: you sound like Sleepy's is the only mattress place where one can walk in and try out a mattress.

1800 Mattress.- that is where you buy it.
Google.com that is where you research customer feedback.
Personally I would buy firm(no pillow/plush tops etc.) mattress from Simmons or Serta or other reputable brand and then add 2.5 inch memory foam mattress topper(cost $85-150).
You will get the best sleep of your life. I know I do, my friends swear by this combo, Brad (the one with pouty wife) swears by it and blurts out this secret to everyone ever since he learned it.

Jon-

I am in the market for a new mattress. Can you expand on your concerns?

Uh, no, I just said that I personally had a good experience. I'm sure many on the forum could recommend one place and also recount horror stories about other stores. Many people in my med school class bought mattresses from Sleepy's, which has a huge presence in my area of CT, and recommended them to me. I thought I made it clear that I went to several stores and tried many mattresses, and in this one instance Sleepy's was best for me.

After doing a LOT of research, I'm having a Bragada Waldorf, queen delivered tomorrow:

This time of year happens to be extremely slow for furniture sales (folks are buying gifts, not mattresses) so you can get some good deals. I first looked into Bragada a month or so ago and the original prices were very good. The sale makes this a great deal as it includes shipping and two memory foam pillows.
