I have a Simmons Beautyrest World Class Exceptionale Crown Jewel, which is similar to this model:

http://www.us-mattress.com/kingsizeset160.html

I've owned it for about five years and it's the same as when I purchased it, wonderful.

Simmons has launched a new super luxury line called Beautyrest Black, that is supposed to be even better, although I haven't tried them yet.

I just got a Tempur-Pedic Deluxe in a King size and it kicks major a$$. Anyone who has laid on it envies me. I did some research on the web and it seems that these beds are either love 'em or hate 'em. I think the major problem people have with them is they adjust to your body heat so they let your body sink in and mold to a certain degree around it. Some people think it's too soft but what didn't occur to most of these people bad mouthing is to think how the bed works. If it works based on your body heat, all you need to do is create a barrier between yourself and the mattress to get a firmer mattress. On the other hand if soft is your think then you'll just want a sheet over the mattress and that's it. I've experimented with this since I got mine and it makes a big difference for whatever is your ideal.

One thing to look out for is the original or most respected memory foam beds are the Tempur-Pedic ones (http://www.tempurpedic.com). There are a million and one knockoff companies and I've heard recently you can even get the knock-offs at Costco or Sam's Club. Try both and see what you think. In my mind Tempur-Pedic is superior but maybe there are some knock-offs that are just as good. Go to a Healthy Back store, Brookstone, or any mattress store and they will probably have a display Tempur-Pedic you can try out. Note on the website that they have even higher-end models. Mine is a Deluxe which runs between $2500-$3000 just for the mattress.

Take your time with getting what you think will last you. I'm doing a crazy amount of research now to redo my entire place. Good luck!

Got one after it was heavily recommended by friends and hated it. For the first time in my life, I woke up with backaches. Fortunately, you can return Tempur-Pedics, even if you lose some money.

From what I hear it's practically the same, but with coupon it's coming out cheaper. I'm not sure how long the coupon will last. Read this thread,

These are decent mattresses but not quite as good as the high end Simmons. However, if you are looking to spend less than the $3-4k that the top end Simmons are, they are perhaps a good deal.

Thanks, it looks like I'm going to buy this sucker.

QUESTION: Do most modern bed frames require the box? I haven't bought a frame yet (or even started looking), so I have no clue. I'm thinking of buying the matress without a box, please advise. Even if I end up needing one, I can get a random box anywhere, right?

Most well made beds do not require a box.

If a bed has wooden slats, you do not need a box. I hate thick mattresses. I think they look ridiculous. I prefer a 6 or 7 inch thick latex mattress like the one from European Sleepworks in Berkeley, CA. www.sleepworks.com
