Not sure who makes the one for the tourney winners, but Poole makes the ones for the club members.

Hamilton Tailoring, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, has the rights to make the coat. Sadly, they closed their shop a few years back. They are now making them at John H Daniel in Tennessee.

According to the recent biography of Poole, that company supplies supplies all the cloth and makes for some of the members. The book notes that the club was particular about the styling as well as the cloth, so Poole may have to make the coat to look like a shapeless J. Press thing.

From what I understand, they have to leave the jackets at the club. Not that you'd probably want to wear it on the subway or something.

But didn't Zach Johnson get to wear his on Letterman last year? Here he is wearing it in NY...with jeans, and over a fleece pullover?

I'm from Augusta, so hopefully I have some sway with my answer. It's my understanding that winners may take the green jacket with them for one year following their victory. When they return the next year, the jacket must then remain on the National grounds.

My family has acquired over the years a nice collection of Masters-related memorabilia. My favorite piece is the badge with the Augusta National logo that was removed from Bobby Jones' green jacket. It was a gift from the woman to whom it was given after Mr. Jones passed. This woman was a little, old African-American woman who lived probably near the poverty level and had a treasure trove of some of the most amazing golf memorabilia. She was the first head cook at the Augusta National, as well as the wife of Clifford Roberts' right hand man. She died about 20 years ago. While she lived, she gave our family quite a few interesting pieces. I've always wondered where the rest of her items wound up.

Why on Earth do they have to leave the coats there? That's like winning a trophy and being told you can't take it home. It would be one thing if it were like the Stanley Cup (only one in existence...well, two, but that's another story), but that isn't the case.

Club jackets are for wearing in the clubhouse.

Are you sure there is no trophy?

There is a trophy. It looks like the Augusta National clubhouse. The current Master's champion is the only person allowed to wear the jacket outside the club.

that's a pretty cool story. a friend of mine got to go to the master's once and he said it was an eye opening experience.

also when it came to the city of augusta, he said it's one of those places where it makes you think, "wow...racism is clearly still alive and well"

i lol'd.

There was a story about 5-10 years ago that Jack Nicklaus never actually had a green jacket for many years. When the club identifies who the leaders are, they assemble a collection of members jackets in appropriate sizes so that they have one on hand in approximately the right size to put on the winner (Immelman's was huge yesterday, if you noticed). Then after the tournament they order one made for the winner in the appropriate size.

Apparently, after Nicklaus won his first jacket in 1963, through an oversight one was never ordered for him. When someone wins for the second time they don't actually get a second, or in Jack's case a third, fourth, fifth or sixth jacket. So in subsequent wins no one thought to make him one, assuming he already had one and Jack was too much of a gentleman to point out the error. Finally, when he won his 4th in 1972, he mentioned the matter to Clifford Roberts who immediately had him one made, 10 years after his first win.
