Marked variation among Cheaney shoes

Recently I purchased two pairs of Cheaney Arthur III, dark leaf, one pair from Cheaney the other from a well known shoe retailer in UK. I received both within two weeks of one another. It was remarkable how inferior the pair from shoe retailer was. After several emails with retailer, there was no explanation except that they are hand made.

Thoughts???
