An ignorant attempt at humour. Signet rings have never had anything to do with illiteracy. They're still used with wax seals for many ceremonial occasions in England.

@ loathing - twas a joke, dude.

side note - im sure they are still used often for ceremonial events. apparently the literacy rate amongst the upper echelons of england, has not caught up with the rest of the world yet. no need really.
