I wouldn't put too much stock in the words of a man who is drunk 24 hours a day. I can't believe Smith has made it past 50.

The Brits set a lot of store by their red squirrels, since it was the indigenous British squirrel, featured in Beatrix Potter books and whatnot. In 1876, American gray squirrels were introduced and, as often happens with exotics, displaced the beloved red squirrels and became a very considerable pest. They were able to outcompete the red squirrels for food, and they also transmit a squirrel disease that is usually fatal to the red squirrels but not the grays. Some British believe the gray squirrels eat the red squirrels, but this is false.

Some commentators have contrasted the old "Red Squirrel" Britain of tradition, social gentility, Masterpiece Theatre, Merchant-Ivory films, public schools, etc., with the modern "Gray Squirrel" Britain of soccer hooligans, Chavs and the like.

Here in SoCal we have had a somewhat similar situation involving squirrels. Introduced Eastern Fox Squirrels have just about totally displaced the Western Gray Squirrels (cousins to the bad squirrels of Britain) from the settled areas.

My neighborhood is swarming with the fox squirrels. They are bold and quite tame, but I would have a hard time imagining one standing still to be hacked up by a hedge trimmer. Red squirrels are much more wary and high-strung, so it seems even less likely in their case.

P.S. It's hard for me to believe that Smith chap is almost exactly 15 years my junior--he looks like he's in his seventies!

The thought of him running around with a pair of hedge clippers trying to decapitate squirrels in his backyard is amusing.
