Just got my talarico umbrella from Zamba di Gallina!!
Hadn't heard of this store before until the members above pointed them out, run by fellow SFer, great service and very pleased.

Absolutely love it, although I probably zero real need for it :D
Great ornament for the hallway.

i like talarico in principle, and ordered one at a good price - more than 50% off, but by arrangement rather than declared on the site - but have chosen to return it. sadly, it hadn't been executed as well as i'd hoped for with the connection between the handle and the shaft. it was a fit-up, not a full stick - more about that later.

more disappointingly, the shaft was quite heavily scratched beneath the mechanism locking point - suspect this is due to stacking or storing long-term, as it was around the whole circumference as though it rattled around and had been pushed from time to time. my lesson from this is possibly to find a way to buy one in person, and check how you find the quality of the execution by picking one out that's not fallen pray to any misjudgement or flaw in production.

as my brother has worked with wood for 35 years, i asked him about the issues present, and gave him my uneducated guess as to what might have happened and (more importantly) how it could be avoided. suggested to him that cutting wood can be improved by taping over the point where the cut takes place, to stop it fraying. he said this was a very widely-known and used technique, and any roughness shows lack of care. perhaps this is just one of the things they've not quite managed to avoid at talarico, or at least the person that made the one i bought hasn't. the scratching to the shaft could be prevented by placing something to protect it whilst in storage or transportation.

i still maintain it's not an issue of inherent flaws in handmade. there's good and bad in both handmade and machine made. if you think it was avoidable, badly-judged, then it's wrong ... for you. perhaps an alternative choice is necessary.

the other lesson is possibly stay with full stick umbrellas. i don't think they're inherently better, and they can be an acquired taste, and they've been proven to be viable and fit a price point or appeal that more tricky full stick constructions don't often get to. yes, i've seen fit-ups more expensive in a range that includes cheaper full stick options, so it's never as simple as first seems; some full sticks are machine made. talarico tends to go to full sticks further up the range, which is misleading in terms of how they're to be perceived when compare to other makers.

Good Morning dear Sirs . I am interested to buy a solid umbrella. I have found the umbrella of attached photos of Mario Talarico from an online store. The store advised me that it is a solid stick one wood construction umbrella. My knowledge to umbrellas are limited but I really want to buy something special and this would be my first quality umbrella. Could you please advise me if that specific umbrella is really a solid stick one piece ? Thank you in advance.

Not an expert, but it looks like congo wood? If so, I've had mine for a few years and love it.

If not, I'm sure you'll love yours too.
