They are already a thing of the past, by about 30 something years.

Only car enthusiasts and the like care about manual transmissions.

Manual transmission cars are a massive majority in the United Kingdom. Autos rarely seem to get anywhere near as good mpg as a comparable manual, so whilst the emphasis is very much on getting better mileage for environmental and cost reasons, I can't see this changing.

+1 in the joy of rev matching as well!

Recent interview with BMW M guy.

We are in a market here (the U.S.) where some customers still demand manual transmissions. Why don’t you offer more of them in other markets as well, such as your German home market?

That is a curious situation. America is an automatic-transmission market. But sporty drivers always chose a manual over the automatic transmissions, which used to be inefficient and have just three or four gears. But technology has moved forward—personally, I am actually quicker with an automatic than with a manual. Our European customers have understood that. But in the U.S., there is a small but very stable following of customers who simply insist on the manual. And that is not always easy for us: Our new M5 and M6 have so much power that a mismatched shift can easily destroy the transmission. It’s not easy. Therefore, for the first time, we have advanced our software to cut spikes and protect the transmission electronically.

Maybe in the US, but I've had a think and I can't think of a single person I know (Family, friends, acquaintances, staff) who drives an Automatic.

I would bet that 75% of cars sold in the UK are Manuals.

Oh, nice. It's a beast, and not the easiest manual on the face of the earth.

Did they give a reason for the increase? I would have expected further decline.

i'd think they lumped manual-matic gearboxes (e.g. DSG, PDK) into the manual category.
plus there seems to be a resurgence in demand for the clutch pedal, albeit only with low-volume niche cars -- audi tt-rs, vw gti r

I've had two of those, a VW Rabbit (Golf) and a VW Jetta. The Rabbit was great; the Jetta, not so much.
