All that applies to me except the kid and the wife. Still, lately, $50 is an expensive bottle. I do that maybe once a month.

-1. We generally have on average one $100+ bottle per week. That's mostly laziness and lack of initiative in putting together a good cellar.
When I lived in Manhattan, all the guys who worked in my building were Egyptian. [vox]It was a very swanky building, designed by Emory Roth[/vox].

French is generally cheaper than American, and often cheaper than everything else, when comparing comparables.
I drink few, almost none, American wines. Even the local ones in NY are so expensive I like champagne which tends to be more expensive than other sparkling wines. I find Australian shiraz a better value than the syrah. The argentine malbec is also good value for the money but I don't know if there is a French equivalent. For whites I like dry reislings and gruner veltliner.
