I haven't worn a mandarin collar in years and they seem outdated. Are they? Just a little uncommon perhaps?

You can vote for more than one option in the poll.

I would say there are very few situations that you would be able to 'pull it off'. I'm Chinese, and currently working in Hong Kong and would still find it difficult to find the right time and place to wear mandarin collars - I have worn an Armani with the 'cobra' collar (a bit like a mandarin) maybe three times in ten years. I've worn a Kenzo suit with Ghillie collar (I found out this term recently when reading a post about Harold Amies) a bit more recently.

I have a navy shirt in thick cotton with mandarin collar, frog buttons, etc. that I picked up for Chinese New Years parties (full of gweilo

). I've been meaning to work it into some every day Streetwear looks, maybe I'll give it a try once we're well into the Year of the Pig... (But I'd never wear a mandarin collar in a MC outfit.)

I chose they are stylish, because I only know Mandarin oranges, which are delicious.

I am seriously thinking of wearing a full dress shirt (i.e., White Tie) using a stiff detachable Mandarin, or rather, an upright, collar instead of a wing collar. Would the shirt with an upright collar be regarded as proper and more formal than one with a wing collar?

I understand that is a day collar instead of a multi-use collar such as the wing-collar which can be worn during the day and evening.

i have worn one once - recently, actually. Friends wedding in Burma, all men to wear traditional Burmese attire, which involved a wraparound skirt thing and a Mandarin collar shirt. I can assure you that I will not be posting the pics

For all apparent purposes, one would believe that posting these photographics, would bring a certain bemusement to all involved herein unless there is some party of natives about, rather apt to be offended.

Oops! Must be all those festive cookies freely placed all over the house during the two weeks of the Chinese New Year festive period, currently halfway today which is regarded as everyone's birthday. Too little sugar reaching the brain, I suppose.

I meant to say wearing a stiff detachable upright collar instead of a wing collar for a plain white Morning Dress shirt with stiff detachable single Barrel link cuffs. Would that be regarded as proper and more formal than one with a wing or point collar?

Outdated...to me they reek of the 1980s.

Is there any special form of tie that can be worn with a mandarin collared dress shirt?
