I can see wanting to ditch the briefs ... But they really do break up the blue. Looks like a unitard without them. So Snyder & co. create a problem by removing the briefs, then try to fix it by junking up the classic design with pointless clutter like a beltless buckle. Bad way to go about designing something, especially when tinkering with an iconic original.

To me, the end result doesn't look alien, it looks like a director trying to put his signature on something he didn't create. Like nipples on the batsuit.

How can you even asses it, we haven't seen a clear official pic of the suit yet. The side details are clearer and more noticeable in clear light so it'll break up the single unitard look.

I'd wait how it looks in official pics or hopefully they show it in the upcoming teaser.

It should look much better with the cape as well (I know the capes PSed in the pic below but it doesn't look bad at all).

It may look better in action -- Spidey's did -- but extraneous detailing is extraneous detailing. Spidey's silver ballet flats are still stupid.

I honestly didn't even notice that when I was watching.

I noticed the silver shoes when he was detained in the street by police and unmasked. Huge WTF moment.

    +1000 Spot on.

I'm not a fan of these changes either. Superman's original costume design has been around for so long that it never feels dated. It's timeless and has always worked in the world he lives in. Changes like this, for the sake of "modernizing" a character never sit well with me unless the original wasnt done right in the first place. Can anyone say that about his?

Some costumes you can (or pretty much need to) change with regards to a film adaptation -- no matter how iconic. On the other hand, some iconic costumes should be abandoned altogether (Wolverine's yellow-tan spandex comes to mind). Superman's costume is the costume by which all other costumes should be judged. Having a Sman costume that looks/feels like the original without looking dated; that's the real challenge. It goes without saying, it has to translate well on-screen too.

The costume in Superman returns worked well. It was classing, but didn't look like cheesy spandex. I wish they had gone with something closer to it with a few modifications.

Seriously, slap some briefs on the 2013 version and you can call it a day.

Yeah, I agree. Would have been the best version yet if they'd left off the unnecessary Art Nouveau detailing and kept the trunks. (And maybe not texturized the shield.)

It's such a fannish concern, worrying about the trunks. Like having your undies on the outside is any weirder than the whole idea of a skintight costume with cape.

I never even thought about it as having his undies on the outside until the removed them in this new design and that was one of the reasons given. It was simply part of this costume design and worked enough for me.

that Brandon Routh costume looks so dated. The boots alone look cheesy compared to the 2013 version.

Yes - ultra low rise trunks there.
