Madras vs. Linen for summer wear

Today at J.Crew I tried on a madras (not patchwork, just madras) button down and I really liked it; light like linen, but softer and more comfortable. Is madras cloth durable, or will it fall apart? Any other brands making madras cloth shirts for summer?

I have several madras shirts from J. Crew and they are by far the best shirts for summer if you want to keep cool. They may feel thin, but they are very durable.

Madras is a great way to make your summer fits a little more interesting than the usual white or blue button-down and khaki slacks/shorts. I also really like the J Crew madras. There's some good stuff on Rakuten if you dig around, it's such a ***** to order though..

Linens should be a staple in your closest though. You should get both.

I find linen shirts to be terribly shapeless and look unbearably wrinkly if you don't live in a humid city.

I don't have any madras at the moment, but I only wear linen shirts after they've been taken in to fit quite slim on me. I can't stand how most linen shirts drape like a circus tent on me.

IMHO, the best madras widely available comes from J Press. A surprisingly trim cut, and a "slubby" cloth with a very nice hand.

^If I ever bulk up a little, I will rock J. Press exclusively. But when you say trim, just how trim do you mean?

Seconding the J. Crew madras as a great lightweight summer shirt. I also love their linen camp shirt, which I think looks fantastic when wrinkled. I'm careful with linen, though, because it's not actually that lightweight and can be itchy.
