I didn't see that as Lane specifically ripping off Don. He just needed another partner's signature so he used that one. The money, I assume, comes out of the line of credit he secured and therefore is really being taken from the firm, which means all the partners.

Maybe Ill dl the eps to watch again. I thought it was an unspecified personal check. Assuming it was from the companies credit line, would that have been easy to get away with back then? We just assume he is the only person overseeing the finances at SCDP.

Exactly and that's why you saw Lane pretty much shit his pants in the conference room when the partners decided to defer their bonuses. He's going to have to "Fudge the books" on the $7,500 "bonus" that he preemptively gave himself as well as somehow hide the $50K line of credit he finagled from his friends until they can pay it back. He's pretty fucked if you ask me.

The one question I have, since my DVR cut off the first few seconds of their conversation, is what the cheque (if you're british/a dick) to his lawyer friend was written for? Do we know the reason yet? It's obviously something he doesn't want people to know about.

A phone call depicted earlier in the episode showed that Lane owes a pretty big tax bill in the UK. He thought the lawyer was going to get him out of all of it, instead he just got it negotiated down.

Probably not coincidetally, this was an era when UK tax rates were extremely high. They've already made "Revolver" a prop in one episode, remember the first track is "Taxman" where George complains about a top marginal rate of 95%.

The check was from the company's book - he couldn't afford to write a personal check. That's why he needed the loan and why he went into the office late night to write it. I'm sure the physical act was easier to get away with back then. There is a chance they land Jaguar and he can pay the $50k back by January/February but he's still embezzling money from the company and putting them at risk.

When did the whole tax thing come up? I missed last week's episode.

Ah, thanks. I was wondering why he had such money problems.

It seems unclear to me. I wasn't sure it was purely a tax issue. Sounded like there was something a little more onerous and the lawyer guy just got it trimmed to "if you pay this tax, it will all go away"

The lawyer also said that her Majesty's government would want to "make an example of an ex-pat" who owes a lot of taxes. Perhaps the fear for Lane was that he'd put his UK citizenship in dire straits if he didn't do something about it quickly.

Also, as far as office dalliances go, last week's dream with Rory Gilmore handily beats this week's Lakshmi/Jenna the drug addict

The Lakshmi scene was completely stupid.

It looks like Rory Gilmore makes a return next episode. Only three left!

But if he does come back leave the ghay thing and focus on something else. Seems like every show now needs a ghay angle. A symptom of too many homo writers?
