I'm looking to step up and buy a new watch for around $10,000...does anyone have any suggestions on what watches I might want to look at. I'm open to ideas on watches that may be around $5-$7k but have no trouble spending around $10k either.

Check out:

Jaeger Le-Coultre
Glashutte Original
Blancpain
IWC
Vacheron Constantin (select models only)
Girard-Perregaux
Ulysse Nardin

Jaeger is a solid bet - the price range you mentioned is kinda their sweet spot imo.

Naturally, I'm assuming by "luxury" you meant dress watches and not a Panerai type of thing.

Panerai's are not things. They are beautiful watches. Just a bit... "outgoing" if you will.

Well I would be interested in buying one for dress and one for a more casual look (one that might be business casual or appropriate with jeans).

Also, I've heard that the metal wristband should match your wedding wring or belt buckle...what is the guide on what kind of watch to wear when?

So is the budget $20K for 2 or $10K for 2?

Also for a luxury dress watch I strongly suggest you opt for a nice alligator strap. I find metal bracelets to be a bit sporty.

the budget is $20k for 2 watches. One for dress and one for a more casual.

If going with an alligator band, what color -- should it match a certain article of clothing I am wearing at the time?

For casual, stick with the brands I mentioned and check out their more casual lines (eg - Compressor for Jaeger).

Technically, leather should match the color of your shoes and belt. Honestly, I find that to be a bit anal, given that your watch is hidden beneath your cuffs 90% of the time, and is on a different angkle than your other leather items. Buy whatever color you like, and, if need be, its easy to swap bands.

No problem. Go on a few watch websites and check out the watches carried by the brands above. Watch buying is a very personal thing, and there is a very high probability that whatever watches I (or anyone else) pick out will not be to your liking.

I suggest you pick the finalists (say 5-7) yourself, and then perhaps post pics of them so we can comment. www.prestigetime.com has good pictures of the luxury brands.

Not much to go on. What are your preferences? Ultrathins? Chronographs? Perpetual calendars? What about case shapes?

partner3008 - my advice is to spend $23.10 on this and the other $19,976.90 on a couple of watches that you really fell in love with when flipping through the pages.

My two favorite dress watches for around $10k are the Jaeger LeCoultre GMT and IWC Portuguese shown in the link. For $15k (discounted), I like the Ulysse Nardin GMT.

Agree with those above that dress watches should have leather straps. Get dark brown croc if you wear mostly brown shoes and black if you wear mostly black shoes.
