LK,

Did you realise that the article is ten years old?

However, despite its age, it still rings quite true.
Japanese people are slowly adapting more to the use of credit cards and other cashless transaction methods, but nonetheless cash is still the most accepted and popular way to pay for things in Japan.
As an example, using EFTPOS terminals when shopping is so common in Australia that most people hardly pay cash for anything that costs over about $20 nowadays. However, in Japan, such technology is simply not used. People pay for groceries in cash, clothes in cash, even pay for cars in cash.
It's also quite common for Japanese households to have a safe in the house, in which they keep household ledgers and records and a bundle of cash.

When I lived in Japan I paid rent in cash. The landlady would stop by every 1st of the month and collect from the five houses she owned. She must of had $10K on her by the time she was done. Bills were also paid in cash either at a convenience store (the bills had bar codes so the clerk could just ring them up) or at the post office.

Avoiding taxes is a Japanese pastime so cash is king. Plus, getting robbed in Japan is highly unlikely unless one is completely clueless about their surroundings.

Yes, I did notice the article was from the '90s.

I think this is a common trend in Asia, not necessarily only in Japan.

When I`m in the U.S. carrying $500cash seems like so much, but when I`m in Japan even $5000 doesn`t seem like too much.

Even in the age of cards, it seems people still carry a lot of cash. I remember when I was a kid, my parents paid for a house in cash

Shamelessly vulgar and visually compelling. You kind of know all you need to know about this person just from one hand and what it holds.
