    Manton,

Is your pain limited just to your back or are experiencing any pain radiating into one or both legs? Any numbness down your legs?

Try crossing your legs so that your right ankle is resting on your left knee. Have someone push down on the knee of the crossed leg. Switch legs and repeat. Did that recreate or mimic your pain?

Regardless of your answers to the questions above you will be well served to take 800 mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours for several weeks even if you're not having pain when a dose is due. That is, unless you have a stomach condition or kidney problem for which NSAIDs are contraindicated. PM me if you have any questions.

Kind of unrelated, but regarding ibuprofen -- is that simply to mask the pain? Or does it actually help to 'heal' any muscles?

No pain in the legs, just the back.

    I will try that experiment.

I take ibuprofen when it gets really painful but not regularly.

I have been doing some new stretches the last two days that seem to be helping.

There are any number of causes of his pain, including muscle strain, disk herniation w/nerve impingement, and SI joint arthritis, all of which involve an inflammatory component. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and it, obviously, reduces inflammation. So while it doesn't cause "healing" per se, it also doesn't just mask the pain in the way opioids do; it interferes with the process contributing to the pain.

I tried the leg crossing experiment; that does not trigger the pain.

It's very strange, I can't consistently trigger it but I know it's still with me because it suprises me several times per day.

Would help to post a video of your squat and deadlift on a work set to see if your messing your back up from them.

Since you don't have any symptoms of nerve root compression and the test for SI joint pain was negative it's almost certainly a muscle strain. Scheduled ibuprofen and getting your doctor to write for a muscle relaxant like Robaxin and taking it religiously is your best bet.

To put it bluntly, doing deadlifts is fucking idiotic.
At 40? Take the above phrase and square it.

As long as you do it with proper form and at a manageable weight, I don't see it being 'fucking idiotic^2'

Yes, I am a pussy b/c I don't want to have a debilitating chronic injury.

Are you by chance a fucking idiot?
After 40, staying injury free is a prime concern for active males.

Manton is a white collar waif.
Some Crossfit jackass probably got him into deadlifts, and look at the result.
He may spend the next decade with a tweaked back.

I know guys plenty older than me who deadlift without a problem. My problem is that I had poor form. I am working to correct that. While this back pain is annoying, I really don't fear a decade of problems from it.
