In all instances Louis Vuitton would have the better quality luggage. If not the best.

On a tangent I find it somewhat surprising that over 40 views but no one has responded.

as Label King said, LV is considered the forerunner of luggage, and many other areas. The quality is definitely there, it simply has a stratospheric price tag attached to it.

LV's shoes are also better made and have (much?) better leather than Prada or Gucci shoes. Even though Gucci's are made by Sergio Rossi, they are noticeably a notch below Sergio Rossi-branded shoes, but they cost about the same (some Gucci's actually cost a bit more, mostly because of the brand name). Now, LV's have a pretty high premium over Gucci and Prada shoes, but in my opinion are worth the premium...considering not only the materials used, but also the design's of the shoes, LV's tend to lean towards classic design's with just a hint of flair that will age well, not only in terms of the leather

, but also in terms of changing style (fashion). Jon.

i would weigh in and say lv is better quality luggage and as said above, that's where they got their start

just don't buy the monogram canvas or luggage with lots of lv logos on it; buy the non monogrammed luggage, it just looks ten times better unless you're buying steamer trunks

Speaking of steamer trunks, do you guys think that LV would still make the cut for the top echelon of trunk manufacturers?

I have seen a few samples of new trunks by LV, and they seem to be very well done, just as the older LV ones are as well. That said, some of the oak and leather or oak and canvas offerings from smaller luxury companies seem to be really over the top in terms of quality. Does LV still rate?

Do you mean by Goyard, and Tanner Kroll? Also some of the English makers like Asprey. I think that the quality is about the same however people tend to have the illusion that say Goyard is better since it is more of an arcane label.

Although I might add that Prada's leather goods at least are not cheaply made items. The nylon stuff is a bit overpriced for a man made material.

They are in the same price range actually of Vuitton's offerings. I.e. the high 3 figures to the low 4 figures.

Valextra I think does offer a custom program. Gold Pfeil I am not sure of.

Gold Pfeil's styling isn't particularly to my taste.

There is also Schedoni.

With reference to E. Goyard, there products are horrible looking. They constantly approach me to have something custom made by them, but I obviously decline, as their products look so bad to me. They even offer me absurd discounts, but I am not going to buy something, which looks so bad.

I am a firm believer that the most expensive product is not always the best, as is often the case:

Mercedes is far better than Rolls Royce or Bentley.
Cartier is far better than Rolex or Patek (agreed, Pateks are much better made watches, but Cartier simply look a lot better).
Johnnie Walker Green Label is better than Blue Label
Johnnie Walker Black Label is better than Glenfiddich
Vuitton is better than Goyard

But then again, most expensive can also mean the best:

Boeing is better than Bombardier (Learjet) is.
Kiton, Huntsman, Oxxford, Bijon and Brioni are better than Zegna.
Murano is better than Lalique
Dom Perignon, and Roderer Crystal are better than Moet & Chandon or Bollinger

When you get into aesthetics and the like, I think a lot of this becomes rather subjective. However, with regard to the level of quality that goes into the "build" of that which at the end of the day is an item intended for somewhat heavy use, there is a certain amount of objectivity that goes into the evaluation.

I think I'd like to see the articles compared closely side by side (as to Goyard and LV) to really speak of their respective quality, but I suppose the Goyard gets the exclusivity nod, as it's less available and commercial as LV.

Very true, quality and looks are different aspects, but the opinion of many, including many on this board, is that the two factors (quality and physical appearance) are analogous.

LV also makes my favorite lace up oxford. It's completely simple, but lines on it just do something for me. I don't see the pair on their website or eluxury, but I've seen them in the LV boutique in my area several times.

Are they worth the price, $500? Nah, but I still want them.
