Hopefully I'm not shooting myself in the foot by posting this, but am wondering if it's possible to tailor this 38R down to a 36R without totally butchering it. By measurement, it's pretty big/roomy to begin with, so that probably won't work in my favour. Anyone have experiences with tailoring the LPSS fabric? And how much would it cost?

If it makes any difference, I just had a heavy wool overcoat a size too big (size M, where I am S) slimmed down to fit with a jacket underneath. The shoulders look a little big on my coat, but with the waist surpression it actually looks pretty nice. I'm not familiar with LPSS material, but like I said, my coat had a heavy wool and it wasn't an issue.

Was it an expensive tailoring job?

Someday I am going to buy a cheap SC and do it and post the results.

But I suspect my tailor will not be up for the job if it really is just for kicks.

You do realize this coat is only made with L.P. fabric but not made by L.P.?

Metropolitan View is Bloomingdale's house brand. Judging from the low gorge of the lapel, this coat looks to be new old stock and $300 is too much to pay for a outdated wool coat -- especially if you have to pay additional tailoring cost.

I wouldn't bother, try to find stuff that's the right size to begin with. It's not like 36R is impossible to find.

First you would need to find a good tailor, then pay as much as that coat (probably more) to resize it. Simply not worth it.

JensenH nailed it. Don't buy this even if it fits.

I wasn't expensive at all for me. I have had a lot of stuff done at my tailor and still a long list to go, so prices are incredibly cheap for me. He said he would probably charge $40-$50 normally. It is a really simple procedure and the results so far have been good. I have had 2 blazers and a suit jacket taken from a 38 to a 36 so far and it's not noticeable at all.
