"Loose" Shirt Cuffs

Does anybody else prefer a looser fitting shirt cuff? I know that most here will stand firm in the belief that a shirt cuff should be comfortably snug, just big enough to fit 1-2 fingers from the opposite hand inside—I don’t like this. To me, a cuff that allows 3-4 fingers from the opposite hand is about right. I have a few reasons for this, but the two main reasons are: 1) I like enough room for my watch to fit underneath the shirt cuff and do not want to have different sized cuffs (strange when not wearing a watch), and 2) I would rather my shirt cuff fill-out my jacket sleeve than my wrist fill-out my shirt cuff and leave extra space between it and the jacket sleeve. As long as the shirt sleeve length is correct, I find a generous cuff to be perfectly acceptable.

(I should note that I am referring to barrel cuffs here; I like my French cuffs closer to the SF ideal.)

Does anybody else share this preference?

i usually fit shirts 2.75" above the actual wrist size.
this corresponds to usually 9.5-10" then an allowance for a watch if needed.

sounds like you are looking for 3.5"+ over actual.
this will cause the cuff to hang past the wrist and hit a bit above the V of the thumb and forefinger.

the only way that this method works is if the shirt after washing and buttoned lands at the wrist.

sleeves should be fuller as well.
shirt will ride up as you move your arm outwards.
might even get caught inside your jacket sleeve and not drop back down.

i have a few customers who like this method.
not my preferred fit.

Carl,

Thanks for the reply—I always value your insights.

Nearly all of my shirts are as I described, and I do not have any problem at all with the cuff hanging too low—my cuff fits in the ‘preferred’ manner, landing right at the wrist joint/base of the thumb bone when my arms are at my side.

Perhaps I’m over-estimating the generosity of my cuffs and need to actually measure them. All I know is that they are not ‘snug’ to my wrist the way many seem to prescribe for a proper fit.
