Hey guys,

I am in Hong Kong for the year, and thought it would be a great opportunity to up my game and get my first fully canvassed suit made.

I have had a bit of experience with OTR suiting and tailor alterations before, but have never had to deal with the whole process 1-on-1 with a tailor. After doing some window shopping today, I settled on Lee Baron, who seems to have a decent reputation on this site and was an accommodating combination of friendly customer service and decent pricing which fits under my (student) budget.

The question is, when I go in to get my suit made, what exactly do I ask for? These are the sort of things I've settled on so far. Keep in mind that I am looking for a relatively modern, young fit. I'm 21, and have a slim build.

-Two piece
-Navy with subtle pattern, no shine
-Two button
-Two vents
-Inside pocket with possibly an additional left breast pocket for my iPhone (not sure if thats possible)
-Can I ask for a thicker lining? I hate the feeling of a flimsy lining.
-Notch lapel, on the thinner side
-Minimal padding on the shoulders
-High armholes
-Pants should have barely one break, and a bit more tapered than standard

A few things I'm not sure about:

-Pockets? What can I ask for in my pockets?
-How high do I want my first button to be?
-What is a reasonable thread-count in my wool?

Is there anything else I should mention? Anything I should watch out for? Apologies if this is coming off as extremely ignorant or misinformed.

With all these kind of questions, you are better of asking an experienced friend to come with you.

Better than us telling you absolutely evething to further confuss you.

It probably would be best to post pictures in a currently owned suit, for guidance on design.

Thread count around 120 should be okay, assuming it's a pure wool suit, which probably it should be.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
